MAN CLA – solid proven engineering for demanding work environments in export markets
The fully matured MAN CLA concept offers proven vehicle engineering at competitive prices, meeting demands for a rugged, reliable truck to operate in challenging, tough conditions. Produced at the MAN plant in India, the vehicles are ideally configured, ready matched to the requirements of target markets in Asia and Africa. A combination of both resilient and service-friendly engineering eases the way for use of the MAN CLA even in countries with a sparse service infrastructure. Equipment is attuned to the targeted markets, creating an optimum, application-specific truck makeup ex works. In the meantime these robust trucks are already being exported to 25 countries through existing MAN sales structures. More than 13,000 vehicles have been shipped since market launch in 2007.
The MAN CLA set up based on the M 2000 and F 2000 series, which sold with great success for many years. It comes as two-, three- and four-axled vehicles and chassis, tipper trucks and transport mixers plus chassis to bear special-purpose bodywork. Depending on where it is operated, the CLA offers a choice of three different cabs. The short and functional day cab is suitable for short haul or construction sites, making maximum use of the payload. Ergonomic seating, an adjustable steering wheel, the uncluttered instrument panel, switches within easy reach, plus good allround vision make for comfort, convenience and functionality. If drivers need time-out while working, there is a choice of the medium long cab with one bunk or the high-roof cab with two bunks.
Matching road conditions and the loading situations typical in a country, the MAN CLA comes with an extra-robust chassis seated on 20-inch or 22.5-inch tyres. Its leaf-sprung front axle, also specific to where it is operated, can carry 6 to 7.5 tonnes. The rear axles too – either planetary hub or hypoid – are leaf-sprung and can be configured to carry up to 11.5 tonnes. A high-strength frame modelled for ease of mounting bodywork results in a high payload. The high riding comfort of the chassis is felt convincingly in all situations. The MAN CLA comes with lefthand or righthand steering.
The CLA is offered with a four-cylinder 180 hp inline engine or six-cylinder inline engines of 220 and 280 hp. The 180 and 220 hp engines feature 6-gear overdrive, while the 280 hp engine comes with 9-gear overdrive. These optimally attuned components allow configuration of high-performance drive trains for all vehicles and applications up to a total admissible haulage weight of 31 tonnes. Furthermore the vehicles operate with a wear-resistant exhaust valve brake, which both enhances engine braking and lengthens the service life of the service brake.
In 2012 the MAN CLA range will see the addition of buses, featuring the major components from the truck program. In a first step the vehicles are set to be designed as two-axle coaches of 16 tonnes total weight and an overall length of 11 to 12 meters. The bus chassis from MAN will be assembled locally by different qualified manufacturers. With an MAN D08 front engine of 220 hp, 6-gear ZF gearbox – optionally a VOITH retarder – and leaf-sprung axles, they meet the market demands of a modern drive system. Comfortable and safe, the MAN CLA buses present a robust transport solution for demanding conditions of operation. Target markets are India and a number of regions in Asia and Africa.
An affiliate of MAN Truck & Bus, MAN Trucks India Pvt. Ltd produces and sells trucks and buses of the CLA series for the Indian market and other markets in Asia and Africa. Through the scale of this longterm investment, MAN Truck & Bus underscores the significance of the Indian market within its BRIC strategy.
