MAN expands range of gas-powered engines for power generation up to 550 kW

At the Agritechnica, MAN is displaying the 12-cylinder gas-powered E3262 LE202 engine that expands its range of combined heat/power generation units using natural and bio-gas.

MAN Truck & Bus is adding to the range of engines offered by its External Engines & Components field of business. The new gas-powered E3262 LE202 engine being presented at the Agritechnica was designed especially for decentralised, continuous power (COP) supply and optimised for operation with natural gas. It enables a wide range of possible uses in combined heat/power generation in the industrial, trade, municipal and recreation sectors. Sales start of this engine in the new engine series is planned for the end of 2012. Reiner Rössner, Head of Sales, Engines & Components at MAN Truck & Bus, explains the philosophy behind the new natural-gas engine: "In the E3262 LE202, MAN is consistently continuing its strategy of expansion in the external engines business. Moreover, additional variants are also being planned, for example for special gases. This is how we are responding specifically to the power and efficiency requirements of our customers in the area of renewable energy."

State-of-the-art technologies

The E3262 LE202 is designed as a gas-powered V12 four-stroke SI engine with a capacity of 25.78 litres and is based on the successful D2862 series. The engine being presented at the Agritechnica is an SI engine with two-stage turbocharging (BiTurbo) and two-stage cooling of the boost mixture. MAN's engineers used the most modern engine technology available to move into the new power-output class of 550 kW. Amongst other features, the charge cycle has been optimised by means of four-valve technology. The resultant increase in power density is reflected in an effective average pressure of more than 17 bar. In addition, efficiency has also been enhanced by the targeted reduction of friction within the engine. The natural-gas-powered engine complies with the Technical Instructions on Air Quality Control, exhibiting particularly low emission values.

Broadened range of operation

For the first time, MAN has equipped V-block engines with threaded attachment points for customer-specific knock sensors, thus broadening the engine's range of operation. The ability to determine the knock limit with greater precision provides customers with more flexibility in their choice of fuel in future. Furthermore, increasing the output to 550 kW gives planners of combined heat and power plants more design options in new power classes: the greater mechanical and thermal energy yield makes it possible to meet increased demands in decentralised energy supply efficiently.

Simplified handling

Thanks to its newly-installed system of sensors, which includes a data recording system, the E3262 LE202 is exceptionally customer-friendly. In future, the most important operating parameters, such as the oil and charge pressures, will be summarised via a CAN interface. This system enables rapid installation without the complex task of fitting sensors or a wiring harness.

MAN's successful range of products

MAN offers five series with a total of 19 gas-powered engines. Biogas-powered outputs range from 68 kW to 380 kW. For natural gas, the available outputs range from 37 to 550 kW with the new engine. Besides the four-cylinder E0834 with its 4.6-litre capacity, the product range is complemented by the tried and tested six-cylinder in-line engines of the E0836 and E2876 series, with outputs up to 220 kW. MAN has had great success in placing its V8 and V12 engines from the E2848 and E2842 series on the market. The continual expansion of the product range and offerings of state-of-the-art technology have led to a position where today, MAN is a market leader in Europe.
