The TGE at IAA 2018 – the MAN among vans (Press Kit Van)

Summary

Full-range vendor

MAN is a full-range vendor, offering vehicles from 3.0 to 44 tonnes gross vehicle weight rating to handle any transport task. MAN has extended its long-standing customer-oriented truck business into the van segment with the TGE. The focus is always on finding the best solution for the customer. Specially trained staff are on hand to provide expert advice and support. What all the applications have in common: The MAN TGE offers the best total cost of ownership (TCO) figures thanks to its minimal drag coefficient (Cd) value of 0.33, the lowest fuel consumption in its class, and low servicing and repair costs.

Lots of space and high load capacity

Alongside the panel van and a glazed combi, single-cab and crew cab bodies enhance the portfolio. The single- and double-cab variants can of course be ordered with a wide range of body units ex-factory. The MAN TGE comes in a choice of two wheelbases, three roof heights and three lengths. The panel vans range in length from 5983 millimetres, to 6833 millimetres, up to the 7388 millimetres of the long variant with the large overhang. The available vehicle heights are 2340, 2575 and 2800 millimetres. In the right combination, this results in a maximum load space capacity of 18.4 cubic metres. Bright LED lighting of the load space always comes as standard. The entry-level MAN TGE feature a 3.0 tonne gross vehicle weight rating, while the top-of-the-range model offers 5.5 tonnes. The trailer hitch enables a further 3.5 tonnes to be transported. The maximum payload of the 3.5 tonner, for example, is exceptional. Ideally configured, it is able to carry a load of up to 1.5 tonnes.

Diverse and economical drive systems

There is also a wide range of available drive variants. Depending on the permissible gross vehicle weight rating, front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive are available, optionally featuring a 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic gearbox. The MAN TGE features a new-generation diesel engine promising high levels of durability and reliability. The 1968 cm3 engine comes in 75 kW/102 hp, 90 kW/122 hp, 103 kW/140 hp and 130 kW/177 hp variants. The four-cylinder unit is specially designed to handle the tough demands of a commercial vehicle's working life. Economy and robustness were the top priorities in developing it. Comfort and everyday practicality in the interior

The TGE's cab combines a commercial vehicle's workplace with a practical living space. Lots of well-designed storage facilities support drivers in their daily work. Durability is assured by tried and proven wear-resistant coverings from the truck model series.

Maximum safety thanks to assistance systems

The Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) fitted as standard in the TGE represents MAN's major contribution to road safety. Sensors monitor critical distances to the vehicle ahead and help to reduce the vehicle's stopping distance. As an additional safety feature, the integrated City Emergency Brake automatically brakes the vehicle at low speeds to reduce rear-end shunts – one of the most frequent causes of accidents – and therefore minimise off-road times and repair costs, as well as enhance the vehicle's residual value. The optional Reversing Assist helps when reversing out of parking spaces. A trailer manoeuvring assist feature can also be activated as required. The electromechanical power steering compensates for countersteer forces such as those created by side winds. The Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) ensures high levels of comfort on lengthy motorway stretches. The drowsiness detection function and the multi-collision brake enhance safety for everyone. The multi-collision brake prevents secondary collisions with other obstacles or road users in the event of an accident.

The new model series additionally benefits from the professional backup of MAN Service: It is renowned for providing uncomplicated assistance, often without the need to arrange a service centre appointment, fast help in emergencies, including at weekends and at night, and very long opening times. The MAN plant in Września will start production in July and the fully electric-driven MAN eTGE 4.140 will celebrate its world première at the IAA 2018 Commercial Vehicles in Hanover. With a range of around 160 kilometres and a payload of 1 t–1.75 t (depending on type approval), it is sure to be roaring success for last mile logistics. The MAN eTGE is powered by the very latest vehicle technology and electrical components that have already proven successful in mass production. Statistically speaking, 70% of lightweight commercial vehicles used in urban areas average less than 100 kilometres a day. The average speed reached here is low. Combined with frequent starting and stopping in dense urban traffic, the set of requirements this entails almost perfectly describes the ideal application for electric vehicles. For this reason, the MAN eTGE 4.140 will launched for these applications in the near future.

Starting in July, the fully electric-driven MAN van design will roll off the production line at the MAN plant in the Polish town of Września. The van will initially be available in a high-roofed version. Its cargo space provides almost 11 cubic metres of volume. Depending on the type approval and whether it is a 3.5 tonne or 4.25 tonne variant, it offers a payload of up to 1.75 tonnes and a theoretical range of up to 160 kilometres (as per the NEDC). This capacity covers around two-thirds of all journeys in urban centres that are currently completed using vehicles with internal combustion engines.

Electric vehicles need to be connected to a charging station at the end of the day – and the MAN eTGE is no exception here. However, if you consider how natural it has become to charge smartphones overnight, for example, the charging cycle is practically no longer an argument to be made against e-mobility in the commercial vehicle sector. The MAN eTGE is charged at an AC wallbox, reaching 7.2 kilowatts in around five-and-a-half hours. Rapid recharging from zero to 80% is possible within 45 minutes if a DC charging station is available with a combined charging system (CCS) and 40 kilowatts of charging power.

The 36 kWh battery only loses 15% of its capacity after around 2,000 charging cycles with appropriate care. Individual modules consisting of six or twelve cells can also be replaced separately. The 264 lithium-ion HV cells are stored underneath the slightly raised load floor, which is constructed in the same way in the rear-wheel drive body version with a diesel engine. This rules out the excuse of batteries eating up space.

A permanently activated synchronous motor is used for the drive system in the MAN eTGE. The three-phase motor is mounted right at the front on the drive axle in combination with the single-speed gearbox. This provides a maximum of 100 kilowatts of power, delivering around 50 kilowatts in continuous operation, while the vehicle’s immediately available 290 Nm of torque ensures agile handling.

Along with the new drive concept, MAN packs a whole lot more into the eTGE 4.140. Standard features include comfort seats for the driver and front passenger, Climatronic, heated windscreen and seats, a navigation unit, phone connectivity, the latest "Colour" instrumentation and LED headlights. But there's more – the MAN eTGE is just as good as the TGEs with conventional drive systems when it comes to safety. It is equipped with parking assistance systems including side protection, a multi-function camera, rear-view camera, cruise control system, maximum speed limitation, a surroundings monitoring system, a city emergency braking function, plus, of course, Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) advanced emergency braking system.

Tradespeople or fleet customers that opt for the MAN eTGE will enjoy financial benefits. They can take part in their country’s e-subsidy schemes and take part in zero emission tenders. The eTGE is not subject to restrictions on entry stemming from any bans on diesel vehicles and allows for early, late and night-time deliveries in metropolitan areas, as it can move very quietly free of engine noise. The lack of an internal combustion engine also has another useful effect: in terms of maintenance, the eTGE has significantly fewer moving parts. This means that various types of typical servicing work such as oil and oil filter changes are not necessary. These factors are attractively reflected in the total cost of ownership (TCO). Last but not least, MAN eTGE owners show a forward-looking commitment to the environment, which they can communicate to their customers.

 

Winning strategy for gear shifts – the MAN TGE with automatic gearbox for all drive types

A transversely mounted model (AQ450-8A/-8F, 410 Nm) made by Japanese supplier AISIN AW CO., LTD. is used for the front-wheel and all-wheel drive vans. A flange-mounted bevel gear is added to all-wheel drive vehicles. ZF Friedrichshafen’s AL550-8H (410 Nm) is longitudinally installed in the rear-wheel drive TGEs. Both gearbox models are already successfully established in the car market and known for their reliability. The automatic gearboxes have been adapted for installation in the MAN TGE and a number of parts have been designed for greater resistance, including the housing, converter, differential gear, planetary gear set, friction plates and plate carriers, while the parking lock has been strengthened.

Adding the optional 8-speed automatic gearbox for all drive variants, the MAN TGE has given a further boost to its outstanding interior qualities (such as its payload, loading volume and wide variety of bodies and chassis) – namely, greater driving comfort. The automatic gearbox is an ideal way to relieve the driver with its independent activation, selection, transmission ratio and shifting of gears – especially in stop-and-go traffic. The driver can fully concentrate on the traffic on the road and does not have to make so much physical effort; for instance, in having to constantly engage the clutch and make manual gear changes.

But the driver’s experience is not the only thing to be streamlined: the same is true of the vehicle. The automatic gearbox in the TGE shifts without incurring wear and tear. When accelerating, it automatically shifts up to the next gear briefly before reaching the highest permissible the engine speed. When shifting down manually, it only accepts the shifting command when it is no longer possible for the motor to overrev. The gear shift strategy is designed for constantly efficient driving and is optimised for the least possible fuel consumption. In addition, the automatic gear shift system minimises the impact on passengers and cargo, reaching close to perfection in enabling the vehicle to drive off smoothly. This is a must, for instance, if the TGE is used as a city bus, ambulance or patient transport service. Fleet vehicles such as parcel, courier or other delivery services, which are not exclusively assigned to a single driver, also exhibit significantly less need for maintenance thanks to the automatic gearbox. As a result, the TGE has even stronger appeal as an ideal vehicle for urban areas.

As car drivers are accustomed to, the MAN TGE with automatic gearbox offers a convenient tiptronic gear selector lever at the bottom of the instrument panel. The 8-speed automatic gearbox also has a manual tiptronic selection mode – from switch position D, there is a connection to a second, parallel shift gate. Lightly pushing to the right takes the driver to this shift gate, which makes it possible to activate the gear lever and manually shift up (+) or down (-) a gear. The instrumentation display displays the current lever position.

In releasing the TGE, MAN is the only van manufacturer currently able to offer an optional 8-speed automatic gearbox for all drive system variants. In addition, the automatic gearbox MAN TGE is best vehicle on the market in terms of price/performance ratio.

 

Heavyweight champion – 5.5-tonne MAN TGE with significant payload increase

 

Offering almost half a ton of additional payload in the same, wide-ranging product selection, the MAN TGE 5.5-tonner is the ideal van for heavy-duty applications and robust bodies.

MAN is expanding its range of weight classes for vans with the MAN TGE 6.100 and MAN TGE 6.180. The 5.5-tonne (total permissible gross weight) vehicles provide significant extra payload (amounting to almost half a tonne) compared with the 5-tonne TGE. The new 5.5-tonner will be available in the same lengths and versions. This is especially appealing to customers whose operations involve heavy-duty transport orders, such as vans with workshop fittings for tradespeople. Nor is there any problem as regards bodies with a higher dead weight, such as tipper platform bodies for the construction industry.

MAN achieves the higher total permissible gross weight (based on the 5-tonne TGE) by technically modifying the brake system and chassis. The 5.5-tonner comes with reinforced leaf springs on the rear axle, which now has an increased axle load of 4,000 kilograms as a result. In addition, the heavy-duty TGE is equipped with strong, 17-inch, internally ventilated disc brakes on the front and rear axles. The only technical changes are that the 5.5-tonner has larger wheels, meaning that it requires different tyres (205/70 R17 C 115/113 (HH2)).

At unladen weight, the upgrade only adds 20 kilograms. This means that the 5.5 t version of the MAN TGE can now offer customers 480 kilograms of additional payload.

 

Fantastic four – the MAN TGE 4x4

 

Prospective four-wheel drive buyers can look to the strong performance of the new MAN TGE 4x4. The chassis with permanent all-wheel drive has traction to suit customers’ needs in a range of driving situations thanks to its Haldex clutch. MAN builds the TGE 4x4 ex works, allowing it to offer the best-priced all-wheel drive van on the market.

With its new 4x4 chassis, the MAN TGE is ideally suited as a basic vehicle for the building sector, or as a municipal or special-purpose vehicle. MAN uses a bevel gear on the front-wheel drive system to provide permanent all-wheel drive, while a fifth-generation Haldex multiple-disc clutch is used for the power transmission to the rear axle. This multiple-disc clutch is notable for its higher precision, more compact design and lighter weight.

The MAN TGE’s all-wheel drive is a smart system, as it responds to the driving situation at hand and is automatically activated. This occurs at rapid speed, since the electronically controlled Haldex clutch has a response time of just 80 milliseconds. If required, its discs (which run in an oil bath) can be arranged in an axial layout to distribute the front-axle drive’s torque between the front and rear axle.

The MAN TGE features the only all-wheel drive system that factors in all the parameters from all the vehicle’s sensors. The Haldex clutch’s control unit receives all the data and information via the CAN bus and – unlike other all-wheel drive solutions – can be freely combined and fully integrated with all the driver assistance systems such as ABS, ESP and ASR. For example, if the ESP is operating or there is slip on the front wheels, the driving torque can be transmitted to the rear axle continuously from zero to 100%.

The flexible distribution of the driving torque not only assists with traction in the MAN TGE 4x4; it can also positively affect the driving dynamics. However, if the 4x4 drives quite “normally” on a paved surface, the all-wheel drive will not be active and the driver can enjoy the advantages of complete front-wheel drive. In this case, the TGE offers excellent, torsion-free handling and is efficient as far as fuel consumption is concerned.

The combination of the front-wheel drive and Haldex clutch means that the TGE chassis does not experience any limitation to its ground clearance, with the possible height for cargo space also remaining unaffected. The only noticeable difference with the all-wheel drive is a small increase in its unladen weight of close to 100 kilograms.

The all-wheel drive is available – directly ex works, no less – along with a 6-speed manual gearbox or an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The MAN TGE 4x4 all-wheel drive solution costs less than half the amount of the other, comparable all-wheel drives in the van segment.

The IAA Commercial Vehicles will also feature a version of the MAN TGE with selectable all-wheel drive for truly demanding applications away from paved roads, which MAN is currently designing in partnership with Oberaigner Automotiv GmbH.

 

What's inside counts – the MAN TGE engine and drive variants

 

The MAN TGE's engine and drive system range is powerful, practical, and combinable in a number of variants. Based on a latest-generation two-litre diesel engine, a total of four engines featuring power outputs between 75 kW/102 hp and 130 kW/177 hp are available, depending on the chosen drive system. Customers can choose a rear-wheel drive, front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive MAN TGE in line with their specific needs.

Engines: The MAN TGE features the VW Group's state-of-the-art generation of diesel engines. Assuring durability and reliability, the intercooled, turbocharged four-cylinder unit is specially designed to meet the high demands imposed on light commercial vehicles. Whether for a long or short trip: Economy and robustness, built to run for several hundred thousand kilometres, and promising top performance in terms of economy and eco-friendliness, are the characteristic attributes of the Euro 6-compliant engines. The 1968 cm3 diesel engine comes in 75 kW/102 hp (280 Nm), 90 kW/122 hp (300 Nm), 103 kW/140 hp (340 Nm) and 130 kW/177 hp (410 Nm) variants. Diesel consumption figures are between 6.7 and 7.0 litres per 100 kilometres, while the CO2 emissions of between 175 and 184 g/km are the lowest in the segment. The exhaust gas is cleaned by an SCR catalytic converter using AdBlue additive from a generously proportioned 18-litre tank. Average AdBlue consumption is around 0.15 litres per 100 kilometres.

Drive: MAN TGE buyers can choose between three drive systems depending on the application: The front-wheel drive, fitted as standard in the segment, has an approximately 100 millimetre lower load space floor than the rear-wheel drive variant, resulting in a lower loading sill, which means it offers the highest load capacity across the entire MAN TGE model range of approximately 18 cubic metres. As an added benefit, the compact transverse-mounted engine and gearbox unit also cuts the vehicle's unladen weight, and thus increases the load capacity with a comparable body. The permissible gross vehicle weight rating of the front-wheel drive version ranges from 3.0 to 4.0 tonnes.

The same is true of the all-wheel drive. Thanks to the identically engineered forebody, its maximum total weight is also 4.0 tonnes. That permits the panel van to carry loads of around 1.35 tonnes. The traction benefits of the 4x4 are obvious, especially in off-road applications. And it is of course also highly practicable in countries and regions which are very mountainous, or where there is a lot of snow in winter.

The MAN TGE with conventional rear-wheel drive, featuring a longitudinally mounted engine and gearbox unit, is suitable for vehicles from 3.5 to 5.5 tonnes permissible gross vehicle weight rating. The rear-wheel drive handles load distribution with supreme assurance, and is especially practical for towing a trailer. While the 3.5 tonner distributes the power to single wheels via an open differential, in the heavy 5.5 tonne variant twin tyres provide adequate traction with low surface pressure. This is particularly advantageous on loose, unsurfaced tracks, such as on construction sites. Balanced axle ratios guarantee the right amount of power whatever the vehicle's weight rating.

A 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic gearbox is optionally available for the TGE, depending on the engine variant. The short transmission ratios have a very positive effect in terms of fuel consumption and vehicle agility. Thanks to that wider spread, the diesel engine runs at optimum efficiency in all rev ranges with no loss of tractive power. While the eighth gear is designed as a low-revving, fuel-saving overdrive, the shorter-ratioed first gear aids starting with a full load or when pulling a trailer. Both gearboxes can also be combined with all-wheel drive. There is also an optional differential lock function for the rear-wheel drive. A mechanical power take-off with an output of up to 40 kW is available for the rear-wheel drive MAN TGE in conjunction with the longitudinally mounted gearbox.

Chassis: With independent front suspension (McPherson struts) and a rigid axle on leaf springs at the rear, the MAN TGE's chassis tuning is unique in the van segment. Safe, excellent handling and exemplary, car-like driveability are characteristic features of the chassis. As a result, the front-wheel drive, all-wheel drive and also the rear-wheel drive MAN TGEs deliver outstanding dynamism and stability even when carrying their maximum payload. Differing progressions of spring characteristics as well as (up to three) leaf spring layers, stabilisers on both axles, and the high rigidity of the frame and body, are all factors contributing to the remarkable handling.

The notably agile driveability of the MAN TGE is aided by an electromechanical steering system. It enables a wide variety of safety and comfort features, implemented in numerous driver assistance systems. For example, active steering manoeuvres, such as is required by the parking assist, is only made possible by this steering system isolated from the engine. Moreover, an electromechanical steering system uses less energy than a conventional power steering system with a continuous-running servo pump. That saves on fuel and cuts CO2 emissions. With a wheelbase of 3638 millimetres, the turning circle of the front-wheel drive variant is an exemplary 13.6 metres.

The single-wheel TGE models are fitted with size 235/65 16 C tyres; the twin tyre variants are fitted with size 205/75 16 C. Other tyre and wheel sizes can be ordered.

 

Small but strong as a lion – the MAN TGE is conquering the van segment Europe-wide

 

Last year MAN added the first van to its light commercial vehicle portfolio in the MAN TGE. The reasons behind the venture into new territory were the high growth rates being seen in the van segment and the desire to provide customers with tried and proven MAN quality on a somewhat smaller scale. Bearing the lion emblem on its radiator grille, the MAN TGE is the ideal solution for light freight and passenger transport duties.

With the launch of the MAN TGE last year, the Munich-based commercial vehicle manufacturer began targeting a "lion's share" of the van market for the first time in its history. The so-called C/D segment of light commercial vehicles between 3.0 and 6.0 tonnes gross vehicle weight rating is booming. New vehicle registrations in the segment have been growing steadily across Europe in recent years, and double-digit growth rates are predicted for the future. Ever-expanding sectors, such as online retailing, are opening up more and more transport opportunities for small and light vehicles. This is where the strength of a big van such as the MAN TGE lies – able to be driven on a category B licence, and offering driveability similar to that of a car. Other key attributes of the 'little MAN' are its attractive design, the almost unlimited flexibility of its chassis and body variants, and the tried and proven quality of the MAN brand. The focus markets for the MAN TGE, alongside the German-speaking countries, are southern and south-western Europe, especially the traditionally strong markets in Italy and France, which together have recorded over 120,000 new vehicle registrations annually in the C/D segment in recent years. The Benelux countries and the UK are also seeing steady growth, with sales likewise over the 120,000 units mark. The forecasts for Germany are at a similarly high level.

The target groups for the MAN TGE are as wide-ranging as its potential applications. Whether for logistics companies, courier, express and parcel services, mobile service providers, trades or passenger transport: the TGE offers the right solution for all customer requirements. MAN sees particular strengths in the logistics and construction sectors. But applications for the MAN van are also to be found in the trades market as well as for passenger transport. Notwithstanding the wide variability of the MAN TGE, all-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive variants are likely to be especially popular in line with their suitability for the construction trades. Customers' wishes for high load capacity are additionally driving the segment above 3.5 tonnes permissible gross vehicle weight rating. A range of chassis variants and engine configurations, and the choice of all-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive, offer innumerable options. MAN enjoys a successful start to 2018 as a new full-range vendor

 

With the MAN TGE, the well-established, Munich-based company is expanding its selection to become a full-range vendor. It is a year now since the van with the lion on the radiator grille was launched to complete the MAN product portfolio at the bottom end, extending the range to now cover capacities from 3 to 44 tonnes gross vehicle weight rating. MAN has had a successful start to 2018 as a new full-range vendor, also including lots of new products in its truck portfolio.

The time-honoured Munich-based brand is entering the van world for the first time with the MAN TGE. The van range has been in production since the beginning of last year, with the official sales campaign having been launched shortly before that. It means MAN has now extended its long-standing, customer-oriented truck business into the van segment. The new van range is particularly striking in its wide range of variants. Alongside the panel van and a glazed combi, single-cab and crew cab bodies enhance the portfolio. A permissible gross weight rating from 3 to 5.5 tonnes and efficient, robust 102 to 177 hp engines make this the ideal light transport solution for builders, skilled trades, passenger transport, and for diverse applications in distribution logistics. With its Vans to Go scheme, MAN has also launched its line of instantly available ex-factory complete vehicles featuring modifications and special body units for the TGE range.

In the mid-range truck segment, the MAN TGL and TGM were launched this year featuring a new engine with new power outputs. The state-of-the-art MAN D08SCR generation of engines is characterised by its all-SCR exhaust gas aftertreatment technology and a simplified design. This expands the range of applications while making the vehicles more service-friendly and enhancing reliability. MAN has also further reduced the new unit’s consumption. The TGL and TGM also boast added driving comfort and efficiency thanks to new functions for the TipMatic gearbox. Inside the cab, the workplace experienced an additional upgrade with optimised controls, making it even more driver-friendly.

While the latest interior design primarily takes shape around the workplace in the short C and M cabs, drivers will also benefit from a redesign of the living area in the long L, LX, XL, XLX and XXL cabs, which are chiefly used in the MAN TGX and TGS. The living area features include new storage and lighting as well as a retractable fridge, located fully underneath the bunk. All the key comfort functions can be controlled via a new operator control system. In addition, the TGX series ensures restful sleep with an acoustic package that further reduces noise levels in the cab significantly through extensive insulation measures.

MAN has added a Stop-and-Go function to the latest-generation ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) to ease driver fatigue as far as possible on congested roads and in slow-moving traffic. This automatically regulates the distance to the vehicle in front, even at low speeds, slows the vehicle, to a stop if necessary, and automatically moves off again after short stops. As a result, the driver is relaxed and stress-free even in stop-and-go traffic.

Every new truck in Europe that has our lion emblem on the grille and meets the Euro 6 standard has been equipped with a RIO Box as of the middle of last year, allowing customers to keep running their logistics processes optimally with their MAN vehicle. The Box works as a technical interface providing access to RIO, the new digital offering from Volkswagen Truck & Bus. In adding this, MAN has laid the first building block for an infrastructure whose services will be able to connect the entire transport and logistics sector in the future. RIO’s Cloud-based technology solution will, in future, enable customers to access their fleet’s vast range of data in a central location and use a variety of transport and logistics services.

 

A TGE for any application – the impressive MAN van with a huge range of variants

 

The MAN TGE offers the right body variant for virtually any transport task. Five permissible gross vehicle weight ratings are available across a total of three vehicle lengths and the same number of roof heights: 3.0, 3.5, 3.88, 4.0 and 5.5 tonnes. Together with the available axle ratios and drive variants (rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive), a broad portfolio is created from which a wide variety of different sectors can find 'their' MAN TGE.

The MAN TGE comes in the form of a conventional panel van with a standard, high or super-high roof – the latter option offering the top height of 2.80 metres and providing a substantial capacity of 18.4 cubic metres. The available vehicle lengths are 5.98 metres, 6.83 metres and 7.39 metres. The TGE combi range is somewhat smaller. It is available as standard (2.35 metre) and high (2.59 metre) roof variants. The body width, excluding exterior mirrors and with single tyres, is 2.04 metres. Various chassis units with a single cab or crew cab round off the basic versions. They can be optionally ordered with an aluminium platform body as well as a tarp and roof bow. In future there will also be a cab-only variant.

The MAN TGE offers impressive load capacities depending on equipment specification and permissible gross vehicle weight rating. For the 3.5 tonne panel van with a short wheelbase and standard roof, for example, it is approximately 1.5 tonnes. The capacities of the heavier models are much higher still, with the chassis of a single-cab unit having capacity for about three tonnes for example. The capacities of the panel van are impressive too however: between 9.3 and 18.4 cubic metres, covering a wide variety of transport requirements. Depending on the body length, the MAN TGE's load space can carry low items from 3.45 to 4.85 metres in length. Convenient loading and unloading is also possible. The high and super-high roof variants provide 1.96 metres and 2.19 metres of standing headroom respectively. The headroom under the standard roof is somewhat lower, but still spacious at 1.72 metres.

With its impressive dimensions and high capacities, the MAN TGE is also a practical option for businesses that have previously been running 7.5 tonne light trucks. The heavy-duty van scores highly in this respect particularly thanks to its comfortable cab, with its ergonomic seating position, and its lower total cost of ownership. Depending on the permissible gross vehicle weight rating, a number of prohibitions and general speed limitations are rendered obsolete. Another benefit is the easy loading offered by the van. The sliding door's clearance is a generous 1.30 metres for example. That enables quick length-wise loading of two adjacent Euro-pallets at a time.

The two rear doors provide good access to the load space. The standard-fit handle on the right-side D-pillar additionally helps the driver to climb into the load space. In conjunction with the high and super-high roof, the opening height of the rear portal is 1.84 metres. A left-side sliding door is available as an option in addition to the standard right-side sliding door. Rear doors with a 250 degree opening angle are also available. They aid loading and unloading on ramps and in tight bays. The generous loading gap of 1.38 metres between the wheel housings (1.03 metres with twin tyres) is also highly convenient. It provides lots of space not only for loading, but also for fittings of all kinds.

The load space and rear of the MAN TGE can optionally be delivered with different floors. While a rubber/plastic floor is available for the combi variants, the panel van can optionally be delivered with a wood floor made of multi-glued plywood, complete with a non-slip screen-print surface finish. This floor is bolted to the vehicle, which means it can be easily removed to be replaced or to install specific equipment items. The optional universal floor offers great flexibility. It provides special attachment points as preparation for cabinet installations from leading manufacturers. This enables a high degree of flexibility in terms of potential installations and multiple usage of existing cabinet systems. Further options are in-floor cross and length-wise rails, as well as lashing rails at parapet height and below the roof frame for easy load securing. The load space is lit by LEDs as standard.

Depending on the design and engine variant, trailer loads of up to 3.5 tonnes can be towed. The permissible gross vehicle weight rating is eight tonnes. Every MAN TGE is factory-prepared for fitting a trailer hitch. Whether a ball or open-end hitch: cost-effective retrofitting is possible at any time. Additional freight can also be transported on the roof of the MAN TGE. The maximum load with the standard roof is 300 kilos, and 150 kilos with the high roof. 100 kilos is the maximum load for the single cab and crew cab variants.

Most of the vans are customised for a specific application – such as for construction sites, municipal utilities, logistics, or emergency services – only after being sold. As in the case of its truck range, MAN makes this procedure much easier for MAN TGE customers by working closely with the manufacturers of a wide variety of bodies and equipment modifications in the van segment. MAN TGE customers can consult a sales adviser, obtain a finance quote and sign up to a purchase agreement all in one place, and from a single source. Alongside the basic models, available options including a chassis with cab, crew cab, or cab without rear panel and with front bulkhead. For sector-specific custom chassis units, MAN also supplies the TGE as a cab-only unit.

Thanks to the different wheelbases and overhangs, the chassis units enable bodies up to 3.7 metres (crew cab) and 4.5 metres (single cab) in length to be mounted. The wide track and the standard equipment specification for all variants featuring the Electronic Stability Programme ESP, including a loading detection function, also provide an even greater boost to driving safety. This is also aided by the axle load reserves, which compensate for any unbalanced loading.

The MAN TGE comes with a range of power take-off (PTO) units for its various applications. For example, the motor can simultaneously power two auxiliary units, such as a hydraulic pump and a power supply or an AC compressor, independently of each other. The ribbed V-belt necessary for this is designed to last for the lifetime of the engine. Lateral power take-off from the manual gearbox (ML 410) of the rear-wheel drive versions is also possible. Its maximum continuous power output is 28 kW (38 hp). Even more power can be drawn in conjunction with an oil cooler. Then as much as 40 kW (54 hp) is available at around 2300 rpm.

Thanks to CAN data bus technology, the MAN TGE features an electronic interface (commercial vehicle gateway) which allows the body manufacturer to take specific pre-programmed actions influencing the control of vehicle functions. For a three-way tipper body, for example, the following processes can be automatically initiated at the start of the unloading operation: Activate the hazard warning lights and acoustic warning signal; set the engine to the appropriate idling speed; mute the radio; and reduce top speed down to walking speed. Additionally, the driver is able to initiate and control selected vehicle functions, such as the tipper, from his smartphone. That saves on costly retrofitting of specific controls in the cockpit.

MAN's Vans to Go module – a new feature in the van segment – is employed in selling the numerous available body solutions. It provides pre-configured sector-specific models featuring MAN-tested bodies and equipment modifications. Vans to Go are available to customers immediately. It takes just 48 hours from receipt of order to delivery. Customers are thereby saved the trouble of configuring custom body designs, yet can still be certain that all the features essential for immediate deployment of the vehicle are already installed on-board as standard, and all that is otherwise required is some minor customisation at the local dealership or at the customer's own depot. MAN agrees partnership with Knaus Tabbert Group, making RV market début

 

MAN Truck & Bus is entering the recreational vehicle sector with an expert partner at its side. A letter of intent to work together in the future has been signed with Knaus Tabbert GmbH. In the years to come, MAN Truck & Bus will deliver MAN TGE-model van chassis to Knaus Tabbert GmbH for the production of RVs. The vehicles will be assembled at Knaus Tabbert’s plant in the Bavarian town of Jandelsbrunn.

In the near future, there will be a product alternative available to recreational vehicle customers in the premium segment. A letter of intent was signed with MAN Truck & Bus AG in the Bavarian town of Jandelsbrunn at the headquarters of Knaus Tabbert GmbH, one of the leading manufacturers of motorhomes, caravans and camper vans. The letter includes provisions for the delivery of MAN TGE van chassis to Knaus Tabbert in the years ahead. A significant volume of MAN TGE chassis will be supplied as early as 2019, with this number set to gradually increase over the years. Knaus Tabbert’s sales director Gerd Adamietzki and MAN Truck & Bus GmbH’s senior vice president for van sales Dennis Affeld sealed the collaboration deal in Jandelsbrunn.

“We look forward to working with MAN and are confident that this will enable us to offer our customers more attractive vehicles in the future,” said Adamietzki at the letter’s signing.

The collaboration between the two companies was announced in May at Knaus Tabbert Group’s annual press conference in Bad Griesbach.

The first vehicles from the agreed co-production were on display this August in the Knaus Tabbert Hall at the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf. This development will now also allow Knaus RV customers to enjoy the MAN TGE’s outstanding driving dynamics and assistance systems. Customers will further benefit from the range of drive types available, as they can choose between front-wheel, rear-wheel and all-wheel drive.

 

Safe and sound – MAN TGE features extensive driver assistance and safety systems

 

MAN has fitted the TGE with numerous driver assistance and safety systems – with Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) even coming as standard. There is also a range of optional features including parking assist, lane change assist and the Lane Guard System, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), electromechanical power steering and driver emergency assist with a multi-collision brake, and much more. MAN features in, and for, the TGE place it at the very leading edge of vehicle safety.

The Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) fitted as standard in all variants of the MAN TGE sets a new benchmark in van safety. The EBA system's sensors monitor the distance to the vehicle ahead, and the system reacts to critical approach situations in two stages: In the first stage, the EBA alerts the driver by means of acoustic and visual signals to the risk of collision due to sudden sharp deceleration of vehicles or slow-moving traffic ahead. In parallel, the vehicle is 'prepared' for emergency braking. The brake pads are applied to the brake disks, though the vehicle is not yet slowed. The response of the hydraulic brake assist function switches to a more sensitive mode. If the driver does not respond to this alert, in the second stage a single brief brake jolt warns of an impending rear-end shunt and the response of the EBA is stepped up. When the driver then presses the brake pedal, the full braking power is immediately available. If the braking action is not sharp enough, the EBA automatically increases the braking pressure to the necessary level so that the vehicle can stop before hitting the obstacle.

As an additional safety feature, the integrated City Emergency Brake automatically brakes the vehicle at low speeds to reduce rear-end shunts – one of the most frequent causes of accidents – and thus minimise off-road times and repair costs, as well as enhancing the vehicle's residual value.

Reversing out of parking spaces in bulky vehicles, in particular, demands slow and patient manoeuvring. The park exit assist available as an option for the MAN TGE assists the driver in such a situation. Its rear bumper sensors monitor the area to the sides and rear of the vehicle. If traffic crossing behind gets too close, an acoustic signal warns the driver accordingly. If the driver does not react immediately, the park exit assist automatically brakes the vehicle, executing a full braking action if necessary.

The lane change assist provides added safety while driving. Aided by the blind spot assist, above a speed of 15 km/h it alerts the driver of objects within the warning zone by means of an LED display in the exterior mirror. The system alerts the driver to the potential hazard by means of the LED in the relevant mirror lighting up. If the driver nevertheless activates the indicator with the intention to change lane, the LED starts to flash more brightly. The side wall protection assist is designed to help in critical situations at walking speed, such as when parking. It uses 16 ultrasonic sensors to monitor the area immediately adjacent to the vehicle and warns of nearby pillars, walls and even pedestrians. If there is something in the way while the driver is manoeuvring or parking, the system give a visual and an acoustic signal.

The optional park assist helps to ensure that things don't even get that far. As already fitted in many cars, the function takes over control of the wheel to manoeuvre the MAN TGE smoothly and efficiently into a parking space, either parallel or perpendicular according to the selected mode. The park assist function will also tell the driver if the parking space found is not feasible. The system gauges the space and determines the starting position. All the driver has to do is operate the accelerator and brake pedals as appropriate. The driver still retains control of the vehicle at all times however. And the assist function can also exit automatically afterwards too – at least from parallel parking spaces.

Reversing and manoeuvring with a trailer is particularly tricky. It can be a real trial of patience for inexperienced drivers especially, as well as for other road users. The steering angle is key to precise reversing, but it is easy for the driver to miss the steering points that will cause the combination to respond as desired. And the inverted view of the reversing path displayed in the rear-view mirror also makes it more difficult to move the steering wheel correctly. Fortunately, the MAN TGE's trailer assist can help by taking over the steering as required. All the driver has to do is engage reverse gear, press the park assist button and use the mirror adjuster to direct the trailer as necessary. The vehicle steers automatically. The driver remains responsible for gear-shifting, accelerating and braking –

and of course for complying with the rules of the road. The MAN TGE's traffic sign recognition feature does, however, provide the driver with a useful aid, drawing attention to speed limits and no-overtaking signs. The system uses a camera to identify traffic signs along the road. The information is indicated by up to three characters on the multi-function display and/or on the navigation system display. The priority sign requiring immediate compliance is always displayed at the top. Time-limited signs are listed to the right of it.

The light assist feature for the MAN TGE automatically activates and deactivates the high-beam headlights. The system also automatically activates the high beam above a speed of 60 km/h in complete darkness, as well as of course additionally detecting vehicles ahead and oncoming vehicles and automatically dipping the headlights to avoid glare for other drivers.

The Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) provides high levels of comfort on long stretches. It permits safe, and relaxed, driving in nose-to-tail traffic by continuously monitoring the area in front of the vehicle. To do so, the system uses sensors to measure the distance to vehicles ahead and their relative speeds. The driver sets the desired time interval and speed using buttons on the multi-function steering wheel, and the vehicle then maintains a virtually constant distance to the traffic ahead. The target and actual distances can optionally be shown on the multi-function display for comparison purposes. The driver can of course accelerate, brake and engage the clutch to override the ACC at any time. In conjunction with an automatic gearbox, the ACC also brakes the vehicle down to a complete stop, for example on encountering the end of a traffic jam.

Another useful helper on lengthy drives is the Lane Guard System. It activates automatically above a speed of 65 km/h, providing a visual alert and (depending on the vehicle specification) an additional signal on the steering wheel. The Lane Guard System also continuously and softly countersteers. To do so, a camera identifies the lane markings on the road – whether solid or broken lines, and however many of them there are. The function also works in darkness or fog. The system will not work if there are no detectable lane markings however. The Lane Guard System will also not respond if a turn indicator has been activated prior to crossing a line. The driver can override the active Lane Guard System at any time by applying a small amount of force, and always remains responsible for keeping ultimate control of the vehicle.

Talking of control: the MAN TGE also assists its drivers with an electromechanical power steering system. Its advantage over a hydraulic power steering system is that it only uses energy when the driver needs it. In addition to significantly reducing fuel consumption, the system also enables new comfort and safety features. As one example, the steering acts as a side wind assist function, compensating for countersteer forces caused by strong side winds or cambered roads. The active centring and precision control provides a much enhanced sense of safety, because the driver needs to make fewer corrections to the steering. Moreover, comfort assistance features such as the trailer assist described above are only technically feasible with the aid of electromechanical power steering. Also, the adaptation of the steering assistance to the specific vehicle's engine and equipment specification provides an optimum steering feel.

The drowsiness detection function is likewise designed as a preventive system to protect the driver's well-being. It analyses and assesses the driver's steering behaviour dependent on the driving time, the time of day and the light conditions. A warning tone and a symbol on the multi-function display prompt the driver to take a break if the system detects that a rest would be helpful.

The emergency assist function goes a step further. It aids the driver when sudden hazards occur. The system verifies the continuous data exchange between the ACC and the Lane Guard System to monitor the driver's actions. Is he accelerating? Is he braking? Is he steering? If the driver does not respond, the system prompts him to actively take control of the steering by continually jolting the brakes, while at the same time automatically braking. The emergency assist also activates the hazard warning lights and makes minor steering movements to warn other road users.

In the latter instance, the so-called multi-collision brake in the MAN TGE takes effect: It is activated if two independent safety sensors detect a collision. The driver can regain control of the vehicle at any time, though if he is no longer able to brake himself the multi-collision brake automatically initiates braking. This prevents secondary collisions with other road users or obstacles in the event of an accident.

But that is not all: Round-the-clock support and comprehensive information on the vehicle are increasingly key to the success of a business. Companies can only maximise their revenues if they know where and when their vehicles are operating, and can monitor their status. A new-style fleet management solution, unique in the van segment, will in future provide relevant data in operationally prepared form for use by a range of digital services. These value-added services, available ex-factory or as retrofit options, provide information including vehicles' maintenance status and the operational availability of the fleet.

 

Optimum information and entertainment – the MAN infotainment system in the MAN TGE

 

The MAN TGE features the latest-generation MAN radio and radio/navigation systems. The systems are equipped with Bluetooth hands-free units as standard, so ensuring safety at the 'workplace' and compliance with the law. All three variants have loudspeakers in the front; additional loudspeakers in the rear are optional.

A choice of two radios and one radio/navigation system is available for the MAN TGE. In the basic version, the "MAN Media Van" features 2 x 20 Watts output and two front loudspeakers. The functionality includes an SD card reader, a Bluetooth interface for the mobile phone, and USB and AUX-IN ports.

The eight-inch display of the "MAN Media Van Advanced" and "MAN Media Van Navigation" units assures safe operation and minimises distraction while driving based on a system of proximity sensors: As soon as the driver or co-driver moves their finger towards the touchscreen, the system automatically switches from display mode to a control mode. The display mode presents a concise scaled-down overview. In control mode, elements that can be activated via the touchscreen are highlighted and displayed in larger format, thus aiding intuitive user control. The displays also enable swiping to scroll through lists or browse CD covers in a media library stored on an SD card for example.

The "MAN Media Van Advanced" radio is even more extensive in its functionality, incorporating four loudspeakers on the driver and co-driver sides. Its eight-inch colour display features swipe and zoom gesture control similar to that implemented in current smartphone technology. It is additionally possible to access "Phone" and "Voice Control" menu levels depending on equipment specification. Another available feature is MAN SmartLink (MirrorLink): When a smartphone is connected by a cable to the on-board infotainment system, MirrorLink-compatible apps can be conveniently controlled via the infotainment system's screen. There is also a Media-in port for an iPod.

"MAN Media Van Navigation" is an add-on providing navigation functionality. The equipment and features are identical apart from the integrated navigation system with European map data and the second SD card reader. The price includes free updates to the navigation maps. The top-of-the-range unit fulfils the wish to be connected to information at all times and everywhere, featuring Guide & Inform services from Car-Net. Users can search for interesting destinations, available parking or low-cost fuel in the area; they can get the latest traffic information from the Internet, integrated directly into their navigation map; and can enjoy many more features. DAB is available as an option both for radio and navigation systems.

The specified fuel consumption and emission data has been determined according to the measurement procedures prescribed by law. Since 1st September 2017, certain new vehicles are already being type-approved according to the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP), a more realistic test procedure for measuring fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. It is currently still required by law to state the NEDC figures for vehicles for passenger transport with registration class M1. In the case of new vehicles which have been type-approved according to the WLTP, the NEDC figures are derived from the WLTP data. In cases where the NEDC figures are specified as value ranges, these do not refer to a particular individual vehicle and do not constitute part of the sales offering.

Additional equipment and accessories (e.g. add-on parts, different tyre formats, etc.) may change the relevant vehicle parameters, such as weight, rolling resistance and aerodynamics, and, in conjunction with weather and traffic conditions and individual driving style, may affect fuel consumption, electrical power consumption, CO2 emissions and the performance figures for the vehicle.

Efficiency classes rate vehicles for passenger transport with an M1 passenger vehicle registration, according to the CO2 emissions under consideration of the empty vehicle weight. Vehicles which conform to the average are classified as D. Vehicles which are above the current average are classified as A+, A, B or C. Vehicles which are below average are classified as E, F or G.

In vehicle classes N1, N2 and M2, coolant of the type R134a is used. MAN TGEs of vehicle class M1 require coolant of the type R1234yf. The GWP value of the coolant used is 1.430 (coolant type R134a) and 4 (coolant type R1234yf). The fill levels depend on the coolant compressor and varies between 560 - 590 grams.
