MAN is thereby approaching its Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)-validated goal of reducing site-related emissions by 70 per cent compared to 2019 levels by 2030. This is according to the company's newly published Sustainability Report. The reduction is the result of a consistent transition in energy supply, infrastructure, and production processes.

MAN has increased its share of renewable energy through self-generation, long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), and the procurement of certified green electricity. Photovoltaic installations are being expanded across sites. In Munich, MAN is also preparing for the construction of a geothermal energy facility in order to progressively replace fossil-based heat and sustainably improve the greenhouse gas balance at its largest production site. In addition, the company is systematically modernising energy-intensive equipment and implementing further efficiency programmes in production. The increasing electrification of the company's own corporate vehicle fleet also contributes to the reduction of emissions.

Electrification of the Product Portfolio

The Sustainability Report 2025 shows that over 95 per cent of MAN's greenhouse gas emissions arise during the use phase of its vehicles. The fleet GHG output per vehicle kilometre of MAN-sold trucks, buses, and vans (Scope 3, Category 11) is to be reduced by 28 per cent compared to 2019 by 2030. Accordingly, the decarbonisation strategy is consistently focused on the electrification of the vehicle portfolio. In the 2025 reporting year, a reduction of 16 per cent compared to 2019 was achieved in this area.

With the start of series production of the battery-electric trucks MAN eTGX and MAN eTGS at the Munich site, the transition from testing to scaling has been completed. In 2025, MAN already sold more than 620 electric trucks, thereby supporting numerous transport and logistics companies in reducing their transport emissions.

MAN is also recording strong growth in the bus segment: fully electric city and intercity buses are in operation in many European cities. In 2025, sales of electric service buses rose by 118 per cent to more than 1,300 vehicles – a new record. With the MAN Lion's Coach E, the company is extending its electric offering into the coach travel sector for the first time. The first battery-electric MAN coaches are expected to be delivered to customers across Europe by the end of 2026.

Overall, MAN increased sales of fully electric vehicles in 2025 by 168 per cent to 1,970 units. By 2030, approximately 40 per cent of MAN vehicles sold in Europe are to be fully electric.

Decarbonisation of Own Transport Processes

MAN is also driving the gradual electrification of its inbound logistics and, in 2025, issued tenders for the deployment of battery-electric trucks on an initial approximately 40 routes covering up to 165 million kilometres annually. Series operation has been under way since the beginning of this year.

In outbound logistics, MAN is working together with logistics partner VEGA International on an intermodal concept combining rail transport for the main haul and the MAN eTGX for the "last mile". By the end of 2026, a further 30 to 40 fully electric trucks are to be deployed in vehicle delivery operations.

"The greatest lever for climate action lies in vehicle operation – and that is precisely where we are accelerating electrification. At the same time, we are demonstrating within our own sphere of influence that we deliver on our commitments: at our company sites, we have reduced emissions by 67.9 per cent since 2019. And we are also electrifying our own transport processes – from inbound to outbound. This is how we make climate action measurable: in business operations, in the use phase, and along the value chain," explains Alexander Vlaskamp, CEO of MAN Truck & Bus.

Sustainability Anchored in Corporate Strategy

Under the motto "Simplifying Sustainability", MAN has now published its Sustainability Report 2025. In addition to climate and energy topics, the report documents further progress, including in the areas of circular economy, supply chain responsibility, occupational safety, and skills development.

The full Sustainability Report 2025 is available for download here:

Link module

MAN Sustainability Report 2025opens in new window

Automation,Digitalisation,E-Mobility,Engines & Components,Sustainability,Research & Development

This means that the 12-tonne truck now also enables the locally emission-free and very quiet distribution transport of temperature-sensitive goods, such as foodstuffs. A high-voltage interface enables the refrigeration unit to be supplied directly from the vehicle electrical network – efficiently and weight-optimised. MAN's all-electric refrigerated logistics portfolio thus spans twelve to 42 tonnes.

With a usable battery capacity of 160 kWh, the range of the MAN eTGL is up to 310 kilometres without intermediate charging, depending on the structure and use – more than sufficient for typical day trips in urban and regional distribution transport. Innovative fast-charging technology recharges the two batteries from ten to 80 percent in around 35 minutes. This makes optimal use of break and unloading times and increases the daily range to up to 600 kilometres.

"With the new eTGL for refrigerated logistics, we are significantly expanding the range of applications of our lightweight eTruck. Together with eTGX and eTGS, we now have a highly efficient zero-emission portfolio for temperature-controlled logistics – from inner-city distribution transport to long-distance transport," says Friedrich Baumann, Member of the Executive Board for Sales & Customer Solutions at MAN Truck & Bus.

Like its big brothers eTGX and eTGS, the MAN eTGL benefits from current efficiency improvements: more economical auxiliary systems, more consistent waste heat utilisation and improved driving functions increase the range by around ten per cent. An eTGX semitrailer with six batteries can now reach up to 570 kilometres, an eTGX Solo chassis with box body up to 870 kilometres without intermediate charging

Field-proven efficiency from the MAN eTruck modular system

The MAN eTGL is based on the proven 12-tonne model from the diesel portfolio. With a payload of up to 6.6 tonnes, a wheelbase of 4,500 mm, body lengths of between 6,200 and 7,300 mm and cab access with only one step, the eTGL is ideal for urban distribution transport. The fully digital 12.3-inch display provides information about the charge level, range and energy consumption.

For energy supply and drive, the eTGL uses the same electric component toolkit as the heavy-duty eTruck series MAN eTGX and eTGS. These include the battery packs developed by MAN and produced at the Nuremberg plant, each with a usable battery capacity of 80 kWh, as well as the smallest of the three available drive variants with a 285 hp electric motor and two-speed gearbox, which is centrally installed in the frame.

A special feature of MAN is the modular battery concept specially adapted to commercial vehicles. It enables a large number of individual semitrailer and chassis variants, so that almost all transport tasks previously carried out with diesel trucks can now be carried out fully electrically – from the 42-tonne low-liner for volume transports to classic construction tippers and three-axle waste collectors to the 12-tonne deep-freeze distributor for supermarket delivery.

MAN e-technology has demonstrated strong performance for customers in logistics practice: MAN eTrucks impress with low energy consumption, fast charging and a long range. Around 400 MAN eTGX and eTGS have already covered more than nine million kilometres in customer service in just under a year – with a low average consumption of around 93 kWh per 100 kilometres.

Comprehensive eMobility consulting and services

As with the MAN eTGX and eTGS, 360-degree eMobility Consulting is also available to customers of the MAN eTGL: The advice on switching to electromobility includes, among other things, customer-specific analyses of vehicle deployment and charging infrastructure requirements – especially for refrigerated logistics.

The MAN eTGL in the Solutrans trade fair concept

The MAN eTGL as a refrigerated vehicle will celebrate its world premiere embedded in MAN Truck & Bus' trade fair appearance at Solutrans 2025 (Stand C011 – Hall 3). On more than 1,000 m², MAN will be presenting its complete range of zero-emission solutions. In addition to the eTGL, the heavy-duty electric trucks eTGX and eTGS as well as the hydrogen combustion engine MAN hTGX – winner of the Truck Innovation Award 2025 – are also part of the trade fair appearance. Specialist presentations such as the "MAN Experts Talks" and the 360-degree eMobility consultation round off the concept and show how MAN is facilitating the switch to electric mobility. In addition, visitors can experience a version of the eTGL with a dry freight case for themselves on the outdoor test track.

Automation,Digitalisation,E-Mobility,Engines & Components,Events & Fairs,Sustainability,Truck

The company is using the largest international bus trade fair from 4 to 9 October 2025 to showcase the next stage of its zero-emission strategy. The focus of the trade fair presentation is the world premiere of the MAN Lion’s Coach 14 E, the first fully electric coach from a European manufacturer. Visitors to the stand in Hall 4 can also expect to see four other innovative vehicles from the MAN and NEOPLAN brands, state-of-the-art technology such as the MAN BatteryPack, and a comprehensive range of services and digital offerings. "With our eCoach, we are entering a new era of emission-free travel. With the electrification of our fleet, numerous innovations in equipment and technology, and modern services, we are consistently focusing on efficient, sustainable and digitalised transport," says Barbaros Oktay, Head of Bus at MAN Truck & Bus.

World premiere: MAN Lion’s Coach 14 E

With the Lion's Coach 14 E, which is celebrating its world premiere in Brussels, MAN is launching the first battery-electric coach from a major European manufacturer. Following the success of the Lion's City E family, with almost 3,000 e-buses already produced for urban and interurban use, the company is now setting the next milestone in sustainable mobility. The fully electric coach uses the proven drive technology from the successfully series-produced eTruck and innovative NMC battery packs. These are manufactured in large series at the Nuremberg plant. "By drawing on proven components from the truck sector and our many years of experience with electric city buses, bus operators benefit from high reliability and synergy effects in service and spare parts supply," says Heinz Kiess, Head of Product Marketing Bus at MAN Truck & Bus. The Lion's Coach E has a usable energy capacity of 320 to 480 kWh. Under optimal conditions, it can achieve ranges of up to 650 kilometres – a distance that allows many typical travel routes to be covered without recharging. In addition to the technology, the smart design concept, which significantly reduces the drag coefficient (Cw value), is also impressive. At the same time, the eCoach offers space for up to 63 passengers without any restrictions on luggage volume compared to the diesel version.

Lion’s City E model year 2025 with new MAN BatteryPack

A second highlight at the MAN stand is the Lion's City 12 E LE, which will be presented at the trade fair with numerous innovations for the 2025 model year. The vehicle thus represents the next major product update of the successful Lion's City E. Particular focus is on the new battery generation with the latest lithium-ion battery technology (NMC) from MAN's own production facility in Nuremberg. Production of the MAN BatteryPack is currently being ramped up there to a capacity of up to 50,000 units per year. The new packs feature even higher energy density, optimised safety systems and improved charging flexibility. For operators, drivers and passengers, this means greater efficiency and safety. In addition, the low-entry bus on display has Class II approval – another world premiere at the exhibition stand.

NEOPLAN Skyliner and Tourliner: exclusivity meets innovation

The premium brand NEOPLAN is also making a special impression at Busworld Europe. Two coaches are causing a stir in Brussels: the NEOPLAN Skyliner "Auwärter Edition", which is celebrating its trade fair premiere, pays tribute to the brand's heritage as a limited special edition. With its aerodynamic "Sharp Cut" design, state-of-the-art technology and nostalgic features, it combines tradition and the future. Another real eye-catcher is the NEOPLAN Tourliner C, whose D2676 LOH engine with increased power and torque, optimised drivetrain and 353 kW (480 hp) delivers fuel savings of up to 2.5 per cent. The latest member of the NEOPLAN family scores not only in terms of comfort and economy, but also in terms of functionality and safety. The Tourliner, which can be seen at the trade fair in an eye-catching "Safe and Secure" design, is equipped with numerous assistance systems, including the innovative MAN SafeStop Assist.

MAN TGE Next Level as the basis for advanced minibuses

The completely revamped MAN TGE Coach is also celebrating its trade fair premiere at the Busworld stand. It is part of the further developed minibus portfolio based on the completely redesigned base vehicle of the 2025 model year – the MAN TGE Next Level. The technology, which has already caused a stir in the current Lion’s City generation and in the Lion’s Intercity low-entry models, is now also being introduced in the high-floor segment. Energy is recovered and stored during braking. When stationary, the D15 diesel engine can be switched off thanks to start-stop technology – for silent stops and lower emissions. In addition, the stored energy supports the engine in boost mode, which saves fuel and reduces pollution.

More than just vehicles: services and digital solutions

MAN sees sustainable mobility as a holistic task. That is why, in addition to pioneering vehicles, the company is also presenting a "NEOPLAN eCoach 2040 Future Concept" and an "Innovation Corner" on the topic of design at Busworld – with concepts for the use of sustainable materials, for example in bus seats for the journeys of tomorrow. Extensive services will also be presented: MAN Transport Solutions offers tailor-made solutions for the transition to eMobility – from charging infrastructure and deployment planning to TCO calculations. MAN DigitalServices' digital services also support operators in the efficient control of their vehicles, for example through fleet management, predictive maintenance and consumption analyses.

"Our customers can expect not only state-of-the-art vehicles from us, but also a complete all-round offering in terms of sustainable mobility – from batteries and consulting to digital tools," says Robert Katzer, Head of Sales & Product Bus, adding: "Our goal is to play a key role in shaping the future of bus transport. With several premieres, the next generation of batteries, our expanded electric portfolio, exclusive NEOPLAN solutions, innovative hybrid technologies and comprehensive services, we as a company are sending a clear signal for sustainable and economical mobility."

Automation,Bus,Coach,Digitalisation,E-Mobility,Events & Fairs,Neoplan,Research & Development,Sustainability

MAN CEO Alexander Vlaskamp and MAN Executive Board Member for Production & Logistics Michael Kobriger, together with Manfred Weber, Member of the European Parliament and Chairman of the EPP, gave the go-ahead at the Munich plant. From now on, both electric and diesel trucks will be produced in a fully integrated mixed production process on the same line.

“The future of MAN begins now”

Alexander Vlaskamp: “The start of series production of our electric trucks is historic. It marks a turning point in our history! The future of MAN begins now, at this very moment. The entire MAN team is proud to be actively shaping the transformation from diesel to electric drive. Our highly efficient electric trucks will make locally emission-free freight transport a reality. This is an enormously important step towards achieving our goal of becoming CO2-neutral by 2050. The fact that we can manufacture the electric trucks on the same production line as our state-of-the-art diesel trucks also gives us enormous flexibility and increases production efficiency.” He continues: “We have invested almost 400 million euros in research and development to be able to offer our conventional truck product portfolio with battery-electric drive as well. The range extends from 12 to 50 tonnes and covers everything from refuse collection vehicles to long-haul trucks. We have done our homework. We aim to deliver the first 1,000 electric trucks by the end of the year. Depending on their use and electricity mix, this would save CO2 emissions comparable to those of a small town. That is enormous leverage! Politicians must now set the right course with regard to infrastructure expansion and CO2 pricing so that the ramp-up in e-mobility continues to gain momentum.”

Manfred Weber adds: “Innovation and technology are not only the key to Europe's economic success and international competitiveness, but also crucial for reconciling economic and climate policy goals. MAN is leading the way with its etruck and showing what lower-emission freight transport can look like.”

Munich ready for e-mobility: diesel and electric on the same line

Michael Kobriger, Member of the Executive Board for Production & Logistics: “We are investing around one billion euros in the conversion to electrification of our European plants in this decade – a large part of this in Germany. This is also a strong industrial policy signal for Bavaria as a business location, as we are actively shaping the transformation in Nuremberg and Munich.”

The transformation is now clearly visible at MAN's main plant. Maximum production capacity currently stands at around 100 trucks per day, regardless of the drive type. It takes around eight hours to manufacture a truck.

“The production of electric or diesel trucks on a single line can be flexibly adapted to market developments, and the vehicles can be built exactly in the order in which they are ordered by customers. This innovative concept is accompanied by extensive changes along the assembly line as well as in the supply chain and logistics,” says Kobriger.

For example, while combustion engines are initially fitted with axles, tanks and exhaust systems, the electric models are instead fitted with two batteries under the cab together with other electrical components – the so-called power pack. More than 5,000 employees have been trained in high-voltage technology for this transformation.

700 electric trucks sold – up to 740 kilometres range without charging

Before starting series production, MAN has already manufactured almost 200 electric pre-series trucks and delivered them to customers. These vehicles have already clocked up around two million kilometres in real customer use on European roads – some with daily journeys of up to 850 kilometres and very low consumption of 97 kWh per 100 kilometres on average. MAN has already received around 700 orders for electric trucks. The etruck is particularly attractive for use in automotive logistics, among other things, as the Ultra-Lowliner semi-trailer tractor is unique on the market with its fifth-wheel height of just 950 mm and a wheelbase of 3.57 metres. This means that fully electric transport with an internal loading height of three metres is also possible. The electric Ultra Lowliner is already in use in Wolfsburg and Bavaria for automotive supply in various route profiles.

Another advantage of the etruck is its three to six modular NMC batteries, which come from the MAN plant in Nuremberg and offer a total gross capacity of up to 534 kWh. This means that up to 500 kilometres can be covered without recharging. For even greater ranges, there is even an optional seventh battery, which makes it possible to drive up to 740 kilometres on battery power without recharging.

Also a pioneer in electric buses

MAN already offers not only the widest range of electric trucks, but also electric buses. There are over a million configuration options for electric trucks alone, providing tailor-made solutions for all common transport applications. MAN is the market leader in Europe for electric city buses, which have been manufactured at its plant in Starachowice, Poland, for some time now, and was also the first European manufacturer to present an electric coach in Ankara. More than 2,500 MAN buses with battery-electric drives are currently in operation in European cities. In the new model year, these will be equipped with batteries from Nuremberg, just like the trucks. MAN has invested 250 million euros in the construction of a battery pack production facility there.

CO2 neutral by 2050

MAN Truck & Bus aims to become CO2-neutral by 2050. Electrifying the vehicle fleet is essential for achieving sustainability goals, as around 95 percent of MAN's total emissions are attributable to its vehicles in operation. Etrucks are also hugely important for meeting the European Union's current CO2 targets: MAN aims to deliver more than 1,000 eTrucks to its customers by 2025. Compared to 1,000 diesel trucks with an annual mileage of 120,000 kilometres and an average consumption of 24 litres, these first electric trucks alone could save up to 80,000 tonnes of CO2 in one year if they were powered by 100 percent green electricity. This is roughly equivalent to the annual CO2 emissions of a small German town.

Automation,Digitalisation,E-Mobility,Engines & Components,Events & Fairs,Research & Development,Sustainability,Truck

In Leipzig, the very first 40-tonne truck was handed over by MAN Board Member for Sales, Friedrich Baumann, to automotive supplier DRÄXLMAIER Group. In future, DRÄXLMAIER will use the MAN eTGX to transport batteries for the Porsche Macan Electric to the Porsche plant in Leipzig, with zero emissions.

MAN CEO Alexander Vlaskamp: ‘This is a milestone in our company's history. MAN presented the first diesel truck 100 years ago. Now we are entering a new electric era. Our very first eTruck goes to DRÄXLMAIER. We are very pleased about the trust in MAN. After years of planning, development and many tens of thousands of kilometres of test drives, we are finally getting started.’

In future, the MAN eTGX will transport batteries for automotive supplier DRÄXLMAIER to the Porsche plant in Leipzig with zero emissions. The eTruck will be charged with electricity from renewable resources on the DRÄXLMAIER site. Alexander Vlaskamp: ‘It doesn't get much more sustainable than that. This is a real electric success story.’

Albrecht Reimold, Member of the Porsche Executive Board for Production and Logistics, said: ‘We are pleased that the supply of the Macan production in Leipzig is being expanded to include this innovative e-truck from MAN. The MAN eTGX proves that even large components such as battery modules can be transported electrically in large quantities’.

‘By using the MAN eTruck, we are realising complete electrification to our customer and reaffirming our commitment to making logistics processes more sustainable and future-oriented. In doing so, we are fulfilling a central aspect of our understanding of sustainability: reducing emissions in the supply chain,’ said Felix Klimas, Head of Supply Chain Management at the DRÄXLMAIER Group. Karsten Wilhelm, Site Manager at DRÄXLMAIER Leipzig, adds: ‘We are proud that we will be delivering to our customer with an eTruck in the future. The Leipzig battery plant is thus making a direct contribution to more sustainable logistics processes.’

DRÄXLMAIER will not purchase the vehicle itself, but will commission the transport. The vehicle is being purchased by Business Fleet Services (BFS), the largest MAN commercial vehicle rental company in Europe. BFS will rent the vehicle to Spedition Elflein, which will then operate the truck. Jan Plieninger, Managing Director of BFS: ‘As the largest rental company for MAN commercial vehicles in Europe, we are very pleased to be part of this historic milestone and to usher in the new electric era together with MAN and our customers. With the acquisition of the first MAN eTGX, we are once again demonstrating our pioneering role in forward-looking solutions for sustainable mobility.’

Stefanie Kotschenreuther, Managing Director of Elflein: ‘We are delighted to be the first transport and logistics service provider to use the new MAN eTruck. This step underlines our commitment to sustainable transport solutions. E-trucks will make a further important contribution to the decarbonisation of the logistics industry. What's more, the MAN eTGX is simply fun to drive, impressing with its excellent handling and controllability, outstanding power delivery and low noise levels.’

The project

The distance between the DRÄXLMAIER location and the customer's plant in Leipzig is about five kilometres. The truck transports an average of 15.5 tonnes. Two more vehicles are to follow by the end of the year, so that a total of three MAN eTGX will be in use for DRÄXLMAIER.

The vehicle

The MAN eTGX used for DRÄXLMAIER has 450 HP (330 kW), a battery capacity of 534 kWh (of which 480 kWh can be used) with six battery packs, an innovative design and a fully digital driver's workplace that has been specially designed for the eTruck. It has a charging capacity of up to 375 kW via CCS and, as a low-loader, a fifth-wheel height of 950 mm. MAN is the only manufacturer to produce an electric low-loader semitrailer tractor, also known as an ultra-tractor, as standard. Thanks to its particularly low fifth-wheel height, it can tow trailers with an interior height of three metres and thus transport significantly more volume. This is particularly interesting for the automotive industry, which often has to transport lightweight but large-volume parts. In addition, the MAN eTruck offers the shortest wheelbase in its class, making it compatible with all types of trailer.

Complete portfolio

The most powerful version of the MAN eTruck available has 544 HP (400 kW) and, depending on the application, can achieve a range of around 650 kilometres without recharging when equipped with a seventh* high-voltage battery that will be available in the future. The MAN eTGX and MAN eTGS are also available with the megawatt charging standard (MCS), which will in future allow charging capacities of one megawatt and more. This makes it possible to recharge the vehicle from 10 to 80 percent battery capacity in around half an hour. This makes the MAN eTruck suitable for long-distance transport.

A total of more than 2,500 orders and order enquiries have already been received for the eTruck. ‘Together with the eTGL, the eTruck's ‘little brother’, which will be presented at the IAA 2024, MAN now offers a complete portfolio of electric trucks from 12 to 50 tonnes. ‘We expect that by 2030, around half of all MAN trucks delivered will be battery-electric,’ says MAN Chief Sales Officer Friedrich Baumann.

* Available only as a chassis version; the seventh battery can be installed by MAN Individual.

Truck,Corporate,Services,Sustainability,Digitalisation,Engines & Components

<pp:caseid>629201</pp:caseid>

German Federal Transport Minister Dr Volker Wissing and MAN CEO Alexander Vlaskamp accompany the first drive of an autonomous truck in Germany

MAN Truck & Bus is the first commercial vehicle manufacturer to receive a Level 4 motorway test permit

Autobahn GmbH grants approval for test drives of the autonomous MAN test truck on the A9 motorway

Around 500 engineers at MAN and the TRATON GROUP are driving autonomous driving forward, and over 133 patents have already been registered

Driverless driving has the potential to prevent fatigue accidents, optimize transport processes and counteract the current shortage of around 100,000 truck drivers

MAN has become the first commercial vehicle manufacturer to send an autonomous truck onto the German motorway. On board of the test truck, which drove around ten kilometres on the A9 between the Allershausen and Fürholzen junctions, were Federal Transport Minister Dr Volker Wissing and MAN CEO Alexander Vlaskamp.

MAN has been intensively driving forward the development of autonomous trucks for use in logistics hubs and for hub-to-hub traffic on motorways for some time and recently became the first commercial vehicle manufacturer to receive a Level 4 test permit based on the law on autonomous driving on German motorways.

Freight volumes and, in particular, transport between logistics hubs – such as the warehouses of large online department stores – are growing steadily. The use of autonomous trucks in this so-called hub-to-hub transport is particularly suitable for this. The trucks are always on the road, extremely efficient in terms of consumption and safe to drive. There are no driving time breaks, so the vehicles can be perfectly integrated into tightly synchronised logistics processes. In the long term, the efficient use of autonomous trucks can reduce overall operating costs by ten to 15 per cent. The new technology can also alleviate the driver shortage. There is already a shortage of up to 100,000 truck drivers in Germany alone.

”The first Level 4 test drive of an autonomous truck on a German motorway proves that Germany has taken a leading position in Europe with the law on autonomous driving. Our goal is to become the leading market for automated and connected driving. Today is a milestone for logistics in Germany. The ever-increasing volume of transport, coupled with the worsening shortage of drivers, is a challenge for society as a whole. Autonomous trucks can help to alleviate the situation. In addition, the intelligent networking of freight transport offers the opportunity to make transhipment from road to rail more efficient and thus strengthen climate-friendly combined transport”, says Dr Volker Wissing, Federal Minister for Digital Affairs and Transport.

"Today we are taking another big step towards autonomous commercial vehicles, the second major future field alongside the switch to CO2-free drives. This year, we are initially running tests with prototypes on the motorway. Further hub-to-hub projects will follow from 2025, but then in typical customer applications. We are thus taking the next development step towards series production of autonomous trucks towards the end of the decade. The law on autonomous driving gives our industry the necessary planning security. To realise autonomous driving, however, we also need to work closely with infrastructure operators such as Autobahn GmbH. Only together can we put autonomous driving on the road," says Alexander Vlaskamp, Chairman of the Executive Board of MAN Truck & Bus SE.

"Autobahn GmbH des Bundes plays a central role in autonomous driving on German motorways," explains Dirk Brandenburger, Technical Managing Director of Autobahn GmbH des Bundes. "We not only approve autonomous driving on certain motorway sections, but also actively promote networking and communication between motorway infrastructure and vehicles with so-called cooperative intelligent transport systems. This is of crucial importance for the authorisation and therefore the safety of autonomous vehicles on the road."

For the test drive of the first autonomous truck, Autobahn GmbH examined MAN's concept as part of the application for a test licence before the Federal Motor Transport Authority officially granted MAN approval at the beginning of April. In future, Autobahn GmbH will also be responsible for approving operating areas on motorways for the series approval of autonomous vehicles. The vehicle operator specifies the routes on which its vehicles with autonomous driving functions are to drive, and Autobahn GmbH then checks whether these routes are suitable for the operation of these vehicles with autonomous driving functions.

MAN with many years of development expertise in autonomous driving

MAN has been driving autonomous driving forward for many years with various research and development projects. From 2017 to 2019, MAN developed and tested electronically coupled trucks in a joint research and development project with DB Schenker. These particularly safe and fuel-efficient platoons were used for more than six months in regular general cargo transport on the A9 motorway between Neufahrn and Nuremberg. From 2019 to 2023, the ANITA project with partners Deutsche Bahn, Fresenius University of Applied Sciences and Götting KG focused on the complete digital integration of an autonomous truck into the logistics process of container handling from road to rail. And since 2022, MAN has been working together with Autobahn GmbH and other partners from industry, science and technical testing in the ATLAS-L4 project to develop an autonomous truck for use in motorway transport between logistics hubs. The project is thus specifically implementing the law on autonomous driving passed in Germany in 2021, which already allows driverless driving on clearly defined routes and with technical supervision. Practical test drives of the prototype with a safety driver on the motorway are planned at the end of the project. To date, MAN has filed 133 patent applications in the field of autonomous driving, 33 of which have already been granted. By participating in the @CITY, BeIntelli and MINGA projects, MAN is also involved in the development of automated driving for city buses.

Truck,Engines & Components,Digitalisation,Sustainability

The commercial vehicle manufacturer was honoured for its research and development projects in the field of autonomous driving - ANITA and ATLAS-L4. In his laudatory speech, jury chairman Gianenrico Griffini, representing 25 international truck trade journalists, emphasised "the advanced characteristics of both projects, the contribution to hub-to-hub and intermodal transport automation, and the fruitful project cooperation between MAN Truck & Bus, logistics providers, component suppliers, research institutions, and public infrastructure operators" as essential for the Truck Innovation Award 2024 to be presented to the MAN projects ANITA and ATLAS-L4 for autonomous driving.

„The award is not only a great honour for ANITA and ATLAS-L4 and the partners involved. It is also an acknowledgement of the achievements of all our colleagues at MAN, who have been driving automated driving forward with great expertise and passion for many years. Alongside digitalisation and CO2-free drives, this is the third key pillar in the transformation to the climate-friendly, safe, efficient and intelligently networked transport of the future. From 2030, we want to offer autonomous trucks in series production for transport on defined routes between logistics hubs," says Dr Frederik Zohm, Executive Board Member for Research and Development at MAN Truck & Bus.

Autonomous trucks are particularly useful for transport on motorways between logistics centres (hub-to-hub): they increase safety by helping to avoid rear-end collisions caused by fatigue, are always particularly energy-efficient and stabilise the logistics flow thanks to their independence from individual driving time breaks. They can also help to alleviate the driver shortage by freeing up drivers for more varied and attractive transport tasks in regional and distribution transport.

ATLAS-L4: autonomous driving on the motorway

"In the ATLAS-L4 project, we are developing autonomous driving on the motorway specifically for the hub-to-hub use case. We are using the framework of the law on autonomous driving passed in Germany in 2021, which already allows the use of driverless lorries on defined routes with technical supervision. We want to test a corresponding prototype vehicle on the road by the end of 2024," says Sebastian Völl, Project Manager Autonomous Driving at MAN Truck & Bus. Since January 2022, MAN Truck & Bus, Knorr-Bremse, Leoni, Bosch, Fernride, BTC Embedded Systems, Fraunhofer AISEC, Technische Universität München, Technische Universität Braunschweig, TÜV SÜD, Autobahn GmbH and the Würzburg Institute of Transport Sciences (WIVW GmbH) have been working together on the research and development project "Autonomous Transport on Motorways and Expressways at Level 4" (ATLAS-L4), which is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection.

ANITA: autonomous driving in a container hub

Together with Deutsche Bahn, Fresenius University of Applied Sciences and Götting KG, MAN investigated the integration of autonomous trucks within logistics hubs as part of the "Autonomous Innovation in Terminal Operations" (ANITA) research and development project, which is also funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection. To this end, MAN developed a self-driving lorry that autonomously handles container loading from road to rail with the help of digital mission planning. After six months of practical tests conducted jointly with the partners at the DB Intermodal Services container depot and the DUSS container terminal in Ulm, it was clear at the end of the project in September 2023 that the autonomous truck was up to 40 per cent more productive than conventional vehicles and thus showed great potential to make environmentally friendly combined road and rail freight transport more efficient, predictable and flexible. "The special thing about ANITA was the complete digital integration of the autonomous lorry into the terminal process. This is a general prerequisite for the use of autonomous trucks in logistics," says Amelie Jacquemart-Purson, ANITA project manager at MAN Truck & Bus.

Second Truck Innovation Award for MAN Truck & Bus

This is the second time that the prestigious Truck Innovation Award 2024 has gone to an MAN automation project. In 2019, the automated construction site safety vehicle AFAS won the coveted industry prize at its very first edition.

About the international Truck of the Year

The International Truck of the Year (IToY) award was initially launched in 1977 by the British journalist and legendary editor of TRUCK magazine Pat Kennett. Today, the 24 jury members represent leading commercial vehicle magazines throughout Europe. Moreover, in the last few years, the IToY Group has extended its influence by appointing 'associate members in the growing truck markets of China, India, South Africa, Australia, Brazil, Japan, Iran, New Zealand, Israel, and Malaysia. The new digital cockpit for all MAN and NEOPLAN buses has now received the "Digital Award" from the Busworld organisation. For the first time, an international jury of experts presented the award at Busworld Europe 2023 as part of the "Digital Mobility Solutions Conference" on 11 October in Brussels. MAN's digital cockpit received the award in the category "Digital On-Board Comfort" and convinced the jury with its smart operating concept.
</pp:summary>

"We are very pleased that the new digital cockpit impressed the expert jury and won the Busworld Digital Award at the very first award ceremony. The feedback from our customers on the new comfortable driver's workplace is also consistently positive," says Heinz Kiess, Head of Product Marketing Bus at MAN Truck & Bus on the award at Busworld in Brussels. "The feedback at the trade fair and the award are great recognition for the tireless commitment and professional work of the entire team. It has worked intensively across all areas to develop the new cockpit and now bring it to market."

A total of twelve products were shortlisted in four categories for the prize, which was awarded for the first time by Busworld. In addition to the "Digital On-Board Comfort" category won by MAN, these were also the categories "Digital Operational Excellence", "Digitally Enhanced Driving" and "E-Mobility Management". A jury of experts from the bus industry, private entrepreneurs, journalists and UX (user experience) designers drew up a shortlist from a large number of submissions and selected the winners. The jury's statement reads: "MAN's new digital cockpit is a clear step into the HMI future. With its innovative "SmartSelect" operation and full integration of the new electric platform and the latest ADAS systems, it helps the driver to concentrate on his work without irrelevant distractions."

The basis for the new features in the 2024 model year and the innovative, digital cockpit is a newly developed electronics platform for the bus portfolio. This is based on the tried-and-tested modular technology of the truck series and has been adapted for the special needs of MAN and NEOPLAN buses with their complex body electrics. This massively accelerates all computing processes on board with extended functionalities.

Digital cockpit with MAN SmartSelect sets new standards

The new digital cockpits, especially in the coach versions, feature the innovative SmartSelect operating system, a newly designed driver's workplace that meets the highest ergonomic standards. In the centre of the console, the new SmartSelect control panel is used in conjunction with a high-quality infotainment system with navigation, which is easy for the driver to reach and intuitive to operate.

A highlight in the truest sense of the word is the new 12-inch diagonal colour digital screen, whose two half-instruments in the centre reveal a large information surface. For this purpose, the rev counter and power meter have been moved to the right. This doubles the display area compared to its predecessor. The display offers a "full screen" view with large symbols in 3D optics and the detailed "home screen" display with a toggle display to the right and left of the central display for selecting. When the information placed to the side is called up, the two side pop-up menus slide like curtains from the outside inwards into the driver's central field of vision. In this way, several pieces of information can be displayed in parallel and optimally perceived by the driver.

The new MAN SmartSelect control button, which has never been installed in a bus before, pays tribute to the same theme. The entire operating concept and the positioning of the MAN SmartSelect unit is not only convenient, but also serves to ensure safety during the journey. Drivers can remain in their usual position with the media control and keep their attention on the road throughout. Carelessness or accidental missteering that could jeopardise safe driving are significantly reduced.

The concept is based on the experience of MAN's developers that in a commercial vehicle with its hard use and also a swinging driver's seat, a touchscreen for operating important functions is not optimal. To stabilise the operator's hand, an ergonomically optimal palm rest is used for the first time in the bus sector, on which the hand can be placed and thus stabilised. The principle behind this is: "Intuitive, simple and low distraction".

Bus,Awards,Digitalisation
