Now in its 52nd year, the Emergency Fleet Exhibition and the National Association of Police Fleet Managers (NAPFM) Conference is one of the largest emergency service fleet events in Europe. Over the past five decades, the exhibition has earned a European and worldwide reputation for quality, with a broad range of products and vehicles on display, and it attracts a focused, high-level audience.

The exhibition, organised by West Mercia Police and held at The International Centre in Telford, focuses on transport solutions for Ambulance, Fire & Rescue, and Police, while also drawing exhibitors and visitors from other Emergency Services, local authorities, and select government departments.

The new vehicles, all long wheelbase TGE 3.140 Lion XS panel vans, are finished in gloss black paint and feature a vibrant livery showcasing some of the instantly recognisable products that Templeman Retail & Vending delivers to customers.

MAN eTGL 12.285 4x2 BL CH Electric Rigid

Showcased for the first time in the UK, in Right Hand Drive (RHD) configuration and after making its World Premiere at Solutrans (Lyon) in 2025, new MAN eTGL rounds off MAN's electric truck portfolio, spanning 12 to 44 tonnes.

With a permissible gross weight of 12 tonnes and a chassis payload of up to 6.6 tonnes (depending on the body), the MAN eTGL provides significant reserves for a wide range of applications.  

With a usable battery capacity of 160 kWh, the MAN eTGL offers a range of up to 310 kilometres without intermediate charging, depending on use – more than sufficient for typical daily deliveries in urban and regional distribution transport. Innovative fast-charging technology can recharge the batteries from 10 to 80 percent in around 35 minutes. This makes optimal use of break and unloading times and increases the daily range up to 600 kilometres. 

Using a permanently excited synchronous motor with power outputs of 210 kW (285 PS) and 800 Nm, connected to a 2 Speed MAN TipMatic® automated Transmission and a central drive unit with rear wheel drive, this eTGL comes fitted with 2 x 80 kWh batteries. Charging Connection is via the CCS connector on the vehicle's front left-hand side.  

To help maximise both payload and available chassis space, this 4.2 metre wheelbase eTGL is fitted with a compact 2.24 metre wide CC Day cab. Finished in Arctic Blue Metallic, it includes creature comforts such as the MAN Professional Navigation Media System with a 12.3” display, Smartphone integration, Multifunction steering wheel, Comfort driver's seat with air suspension, lumbar support, and shoulder adjustment, and Climatronic air conditioning.

Driver Assistance Systems include Cruise Control, Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS), Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, Lane Change Support, Turn Assist, Front Detection and a Reversing Motion System.

Front and rear axle capacities are 4700 kg and 8700 kg, respectively.

MAN TGX 26.480 6x2/2 BL SA EfficientLine+ Midlift Tractor – a vehicle specified to help aid efficiency

Debuting in the UK at RTX 2026 is the new MAN TGX EfficientLine+ tractor, a vehicle designed to help operators maximise their fleet efficiency.

MAN EfficientLine+ (often associated with the flagship TGX series) is a factory-configured, fuel-saving package specifically designed to reduce the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for long-haul transport. The EfficientLine+ concept delivers significant diesel savings through optimised aerodynamics, reduced vehicle weight, and smart software.

In a comparison, the TGX 26.480 6x2/2 BL SA EfficientLine+ Midlift Tractor has shown up to 8 percent fuel savings compared with a standard TGX 26.480 6x2/2 BL SA, which can translate into annual fuel cost reductions of up to £6,600 GBP, based on 150,000 km per year.

The EfficientLine+ draws on a package of factory options, all proven to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs. These features include MAN OptiView mirror replacement, an energy-saving compressor, top-grade A-label tyres, a new Aero front bumper, and a speed limiter set to 85 km/h.

MAN OptiView not only improves the driver's view of the surrounding area but also improves the vehicle's aerodynamic performance by reducing frontal drag, therefore increasing fuel efficiency.

The MAN Energy-saving compressor is designed to supply the vehicle with compressed air only when the system pressure falls below a specific threshold. When the reservoir is full, it switches to idle mode, thereby reducing engine load and unnecessary energy consumption.

A-label tyres are fitted to all axles of the MAN TGX EfficientLine+. Since 2012, all EU tyres have received a rating based on three points of criteria – wet grip performance, fuel efficiency, and external noise. This rating measures how much energy is required to keep the tire moving. An "A" rating tyre is proven to use less fuel and produce fewer emissions.

MANs Aero front bumper is designed to improve airflow from the front of the vehicle when traveling at higher speeds on motorways and dual carriageways, thereby reducing drag, enhancing aerodynamics, and further increasing fuel efficiency. The new Aero front bumper, featuring a 50 mm extension, sees changes to the front grille and bumper, a new intake shape, and a deeper, more rounded design.

Speed limiter set to 85 km/h. Having a vehicle's speed limiter set to a maximum of 85 km/h (53 mph) is known to help save fuel and therefore reduce Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

This TGX 26.480 6x2/2 EfficientLine+ Midlift Tractor is powered by MAN's D26 12.4 litre, 6 cylinder, Euro VI OBD-E engine, which delivers 480 PS (353 kW) and 2450 Nm, and is mounted to a 12 Speed MAN TipMatic® automated transmission.

Sitting atop the 2600 mm wheelbase chassis is a GM Medium roof sleeper cab painted in MAN Titanium Silver. Once behind the wheel, the driver is greeted by MAN's Professional Navigation Media System with a 12.3” display, an Advanced sound system with a subwoofer, MAN SmartSelect infotainment control with a touchpad and direct-access buttons, and Smartphone integration.

This fully electric 4x2 tractor offers customers and operators a 42,000 kg Gross Combination Weight (GCW) solution that promises to drive down emissions.

Driven by a permanently excited synchronous motor that delivers 400 kW (544 PS) of power and 1,250 Nm of torque, this vehicle's charging capacity is set at 375 kW DC. For ease of use, it features CCS charging connection points on both the left and right front sides.

Housed on the chassis are 6 x 80 kWh (480 kWh) batteries that power a central drive unit and a 4 Speed MAN TipMatic® automated transmission, which in turn drives the rear axle. To increase payload and ensure parts and service commonality, the MAN eTruck uses the same rear axle as the equivalent diesel (ICE) models.

For operators and customers who want to get behind the wheel of an eTGX Tractor with a loaded trailer to see how an all-electric vehicle could work for them and their operation, MAN has an eTGX 20.544 4x2 in the ride-and-drive section.

Coupled to a new Dawsongroup tri-axle curtainsider built by Lawrence David Trailers, this combination showcases the possibilities of operating an eTruck tractor-trailer combination that helps operators reduce their CO2 footprint and improve their sustainability statistics.

Plated at 42 tonnes GCW (Gross Combination Weight), this eTGX is driven by a permanently excited synchronous motor that delivers 400 kW (544 PS) of power and 1,250 Nm of torque.

Housed on the chassis are 6 x 80 kWh (480 kWh) batteries that power a central drive unit and a 4 Speed MAN TipMatic® automated transmission, which in turn drives the rear axle. Established in 1984 with a single truck and ten skips, Willshee’s Waste & Recycling now operates from two state-of-the-art recycling centres, in Burton on Trent and Swadlincote and boasts a large fleet of latest-generation vehicles. With second-generation family members heavily involved, Willshee’s has grown into the largest independent waste and recycling company in the UK.

MAN eTGS 20.449 4x2 Electric 4x2 Rigid (Ride and Drive)

The new all-electric, battery-powered MAN eTGS 4x2 rigid is being presented for the first time in Northern Ireland and is available for test drives in the RTX Show ride and drive section.

The vehicle is rated at 20 tonnes gross vehicle weight (GVW) and is powered by a Permanently Excited Synchronous motor delivering 330 kW (449 PS) and 1150 Nm of torque. It is equipped with four 80 kWh batteries, totalling 320 kWh, which optimise the balance between range and payload. A 4-speed MAN TipMatic automated transmission is mounted mid-chassis and connected to the central drive unit, transmitting power to a standard rear axle via a traditional propshaft.

The vehicle features a 375 kW DC charging capacity and Combined Charging System (CCS) connections at both the left and right front corners. Its compact footprint, efficient payload capacity, and advanced eco-friendly drivetrain contribute to business decarbonisation objectives.

Sitting on top of the 5650 mm wheelbase chassis and resting on air-suspended axles at both the front and rear is a TM medium-roof sleeper cab painted Arctic Blue Metallic. Specified with MAN’s OptiView mirror replacement system, roof spoiler, sunshade, automatic wipers with rain sensor, LED lighting, and automatic driving light control with a light sensor, this configuration provides a compact design and enhanced driver comfort for overnight stays.

This fully electric 4x2 tractor offers customers and operators alike a 42,000 kg Gross Combination Weight (GCW) solution that promises to drive down emissions.

Driven by a permanently excited synchronous motor, which delivers power outputs of 330 kW (449 PS) and 1,150 Nm of torque, this vehicle's charging capacity is set at 375 kW DC. For ease of use, it features CCS charging connection points on both the left and right front sides. The chassis houses 6 x 80 kWh (480 kWh) batteries that power a central drive unit and a 4 speed MAN TipMatic® automated transmission, which in turn drives the rear axle via a traditional propshaft.

This vehicle’s 4x2 wheelbase measures 3,750 mm, it features a 9,000 kg front axle and an 11,500 kg rear axle. In line with UK regulations, its GCW (Gross Combination Weight) is set at 42,000 kg. Front suspension is via leaf spring, and rear suspension is on air.

MAN Truck & Bus SE plans to invest around €300 million in the expansion and further development of its European service network by 2030. This is the largest investment of its kind in MAN's history. The company intends to use this investment to create new bases in Europe, modernize existing locations, optimize regional coverage, further improve service quality, and continue to work intensively on making the network fit for electric mobility. At the beginning of the year, the company announced its intention to reduce costs with its "MAN2030+" program in order to be able to make significant investments in growth and innovation. MAN already has an exceptionally strong network of service and sales locations.  

There are around 1,200 MAN-owned and partner companies across Europe, with a total of approximately 7,000 employees working in MAN companies. MAN customers across Europe can rely on round-the-clock support, every day of the week. More than 2,000 MAN service centers and cooperation partners provide seamless support via the MAN Mobile24 breakdown and mobility service. In Germany, for example, MAN already has the largest manufacturer-owned service network with more than 340 of its own and partner service locations.

Shorter distances  

In the future, for example, the distances customers have to travel to the workshops will be even shorter. The goal is for almost 80 percent of customers to have a travel time of less than 30 minutes to the next MAN service location. The most important markets in which this goal is to be achieved as a priority and before 2030 include Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, as well as France, Great Britain, Italy, Spain, Poland, and Turkey, among others. In certain regions with particularly high logistics requirements, the goal is to be achieved by creating new bases, among other measures. "We are opening an average of seven new branches per year in these countries," said Baumann. 

MAN already has 68 service and sales locations in the UK, with around 900 employees in total and 550 in our own branches. A service investment of around 40 million euros is planned for the UK MAN Network by 2030, and several additional UK locations are to be opened by 2031.

Fit for sustainable mobility 

MAN is also working flat out at all levels to make its sales and service locations fit for sustainable mobility. By 2026, two out of three bases are to be prepared for e-mobility. Around one third of the planned investments totaling around 300 million euros will therefore be channeled into electromobility and digitalization. This comprises a bundle of measures: 

• Sales and service staff in Europe are receiving training - around 8,000 employees, from sales representatives to high-voltage mechanics, are undergoing further intensive training on the subject of e-mobility. In Germany, for example, the budget for further training in the field of e-mobility is being doubled as part of the investment program. MAN not only has a highly qualified team, but is also a very good employer. MAN has been named Top Employer 2025 in three European markets – the UK, Spain, and France.
• Several MAN-owned battery repair centers are already in operation across Europe, including in Germany, Spain, Belgium, Austria, and Italy. Austria acts as a hub for the neighboring countries of Czechia, Slovakia, and Hungary. Further countries will be connected within the next few months. Through partners, this also already applies to Sweden and will soon apply to the Netherlands. By 2030, the plan is to further expand the network of battery repair centers and to tap into all European markets.   
• As part of the cooperation with energy company E.ON, a large number of MAN service branches will be equipped with publicly accessible charging points for electric trucks. In total, the cooperation comprises up to 400 charging points at up to 170 locations in Europe, including up to 125 locations in Germany alone. The German locations in Berlin-Wildau, Fürstenwalde, and Karlsfeld, the Austrian location in Eugendorf, and Čestlice in Czechia are already live. Further stations will be opened in various markets later this year.
• The further expansion of photovoltaic systems at MAN branches, together with the widespread installation of LED lighting and state-of-the-art heating systems, is an important step toward sustainability.
• The digitization of workshop processes is being consistently driven forward. Service advisors and technicians have already been equipped with iPads to handle service orders, documentation, and communication digitally. In addition, app solutions and artificial intelligence are to support the end-to-end digitization of workshop visits and ensure more efficient processes, greater transparency, and improved service quality for customers.

Jan added, “Strategically located on the busy Altens Industrial Estate and near the main A90, means we can quickly and confidently service the needs of customers in the surrounding area and at the same time be easily accessible to anyone passing by who may need assistance.”

In addition to providing an advanced, dedicated learning environment for vehicle technicians, this new facility gives service, parts, sales, and management delegates access to leading-edge classroom training, enabling them to build essential skills and boost their career growth.

As a robust, dependable and easy-to-body chassis platform, the MAN TGS 8x4 sets itself apart from other vehicles due to its flexibility, superior off-road traction and chassis payload allowances. During the roadshow, customers have the opportunity to drive an array of TGS models, rated at 32 tonnes, including Tippers, Hook loaders, and Tipper Grabs. For many, it will be a first opportunity to test drive a TGS 8x4 fitted with a recyclable high-density polyethylene (HDPE) tipper body featuring an exoskeleton frame, designed by Goliath and built under licence by Meiller-Boweld.

The construction roadshow TGS’s all feature the same robust, efficient and powerful, MAN D26, 12.4 litre, 6 cylinder, Euro VI OBD-E engines, in either 440 PS, 480 PS or 540 PS (324 kW, 355 kW and 397 kW respectively).

The lighter and more compact TGM 4x2 offers construction-focused customers an easy-to-body, lightweight chassis suitable for a wide range of applications. Powered by MAN’s 250 PS (184 kW) D08 six-cylinder engine and plated at 18 tonnes GVW, the roadshow TGM features a Skiploader body built by Meiller-Boweld.

To meet the needs of customers seeking a 3.5-tonne all-wheel drive van, ideal as a service support vehicle or lighter off-road solution,  MAN is also showcasing the TGE 3.200 4x4. Powered by MAN’s 2.0-litre four-cylinder Euro 6 bi-turbo diesel engine, this highly specified panel van with a 3,640 mm wheelbase delivers 200 PS (147 kW) through an 8-speed automatic transmission. Inside, it features all the luxuries a driver could want, including MAN Media Van Navigation Business with a 12.9” touchscreen, multifunction steering wheel, electronic parking brake with Auto-Hold, and Keyless Start, among many other premium features.

The new facility offers 1,692 square metres (18,212 square feet) of space. It houses seven vehicle service and repair bays, a combination of five service bays and two Pet Reg bays, a bright and airy service reception and parts counter area, customer meeting points, dedicated sales offices for both new and TopUsed vehicles and hot desks for field-based staff.

Drivers waiting with vehicles have a dedicated and comfortable waiting area featuring a digital television, vending machines serving both hot and cold drinks and cold snacks, as well as mobile phone charging points. 

In preparation for the transition to eMobility, the new Stockton facility has a dedicated electric vehicle service and repair bay as well as the necessary tooling to perform Electric Vehicle Maintenance, Diagnostics, and Repair work. Furthermore, to ensure technicians are knowledgeable, confident, and safe around Electric Vehicles, they have been trained to meet the High-Voltage Electric Vehicle standards as specified by MAN Truck & Bus UK.

To ensure the new brownfield facility met MANs stringent sustainability program, during construction, the demolition and fit-out retained the existing structural steel frame and hard standings. Recycled materials from the demolition were reused on-site, and during the build, 75% of the labour required was sourced locally. The 3.5 acre plot provides easy access and ample parking for HGVs, whereas enhanced roof lights supply natural lighting throughout the building.

Jan added, "This considerable investment shows our long-term commitment to both the North East and our strong customer base across the surrounding area. It also demonstrates a clear promise to the experienced team in Stockton, who have worked hard to ensure customer satisfaction over the years. This brand new facility will allow us to expand further across the area, and we're thrilled and excited to have this opportunity.”

MAN Truck & Bus has announced the appointment of Jan Kohlmeier as Managing Director of MAN Truck & Bus UK Ltd, he will take up his new position on 1st August 2025. 

Jan began his career with MAN Truck & Bus in 2004 and has held various roles in Sales and Customer Service across Eastern Europe and Asia Pacific. Since 2020, Jan has been the Managing Director of MAN Truck & Bus in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

The new vehicles, all carrying the iconic company livery of red cab and white body, with a traditional baker's toque hat over the McGhee name, are all fitted with bespoke tailor-built box bodies.

To help maximise the company's delivery function and reduce part load running, each vehicle has been tailor-built to carry standardised confectionery and bakery trays. These trays form the backbone of McGhee’s delivery service and are accepted widely within the bakery industry.

Joining a fleet of 80 vehicles, the new TGE’s will deliver McGhee’s freshly baked products to all the major national high street retailers such as ASDA, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Morrisons, plus selected Co-op, Scotmid, B&M, SPAR, Iceland and One-O-One stores. This is in addition to the many independent retailers across Scotland, that have been the foundations of the business for more than 70 years. 

Stuart McGhee, Sales Director, D McGhee and Sons Ltd, said, “As we bake our produce fresh daily, both overnight and into the early hours, when considering new fleet replacements, we needed to work with a vehicle manufacturer whose vans were reliable, robust, trustworthy and turnkey ready at all times. We’ve seen and heard a lot of positive comments from other MAN TGE users, both locally and further afield, so we were delighted by MAN’s professionalism throughout. 

“It’s paramount that our vehicles have the support of a dedicated commercial vehicle dealer network, a network that both understands our requirements and recognises our business model, offering extended network opening hours to support us through the night if needed.”

Stuart continued, “It was clear from our initial conversation that MAN offers a consultative and partnering approach to customer service. This started by offering knowledgeable and balanced advice as to what model would best fit our operation and why. MAN’s commitment to customer care really shone through once the vehicles started arriving in the UK, with their local van sales executive David McColm delivering the vehicles directly to the bodybuilders, ensuring the entire bodybuild process went seamlessly.

“The vehicle preparation, PDI and delivery process went without a hitch too.” Added Stuart. “Our requirement to work with a partnering supplier and have our vehicles ready at all times, was clearly taken onboard.”

Offering a car-like driving experience McGhee’s New TGE’s are all specified in rear-wheel drive configuration with six-speed manual transmissions. Powered by the latest generation 4 cylinder, 160 bhp EU6d 2.0 litre, low consumption, diesel engines, each vehicle is based on a 4,490 mm wheelbase factory-built chassis cab.

“To ensure our produce is delivered fresh our vehicles are on the road making their deliveries throughout the early hours of the morning, so to ensure our drivers have a safe and relaxed working environment the vehicles we operate must be secure and comfortable,” explained Stuart. “Looking at the TGE’s interior it’s easy to see why they are so popular with the drivers, the cabs are well laid out offering a car like driving experience, quiet and present a relaxing drive.”    

Designed around the driver the MAN TGE offers a bright, airy, safe, and secure workspace. Bringing driver comfort and safety to the fore, each of the vehicles features ergonomically designed seats, spacious and practical storage solutions, cup holders, USB ports and advanced infotainment systems. Driver safety, a key area of McGhee’s business, is met in the form of all vehicles being equipped with Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), ABS, ESP, Crosswind Assist, Multi-collision Brake and Hill-assent Assist. Forward and rear-facing cameras have also been fitted across the fleet and to further help maximise visibility the vehicles were ordered with extended mirror arms.

Each of the vehicles has a fiberglass deflector fitted on top of the cab to aid with aero efficiency and help maximise fuel efficiency. Sitting on top of the chassis is a galvanised frame on top of which sits a 4,850 mm long, 2,400 mm wide and 2,600 mm high body, featuring a wisadeck floor, translucent roof panel and a slide-out rear step.  

Spread across Scotland McGhee’s offers a range of bakery goods, baked and served fresh to service the local community. With over 100 products being produced daily, the award-winning Crispy Rolls potato scones, pancakes, crumpets, empire biscuits, donuts, yum-yums, topped off with a full range of celebratory seasonal products. They also supply a range of fresh and frozen goods to food service, retail and wholesale markets.

Founded in 1936, by Dugald McGhee, McGhee’s original bakehouse was in Maryhill Glasgow. In the 1950s Dugald’s sons Jim, Calder, Douglas and Gavin joined the company all becoming directors during the 50s and 60s. In 2005 McGhee’s Bakers moved to a state-of-the-art purpose-built premises in Port Dundas, a facility which has seen considerable investment and is still the Head Office. Over the years McGhee’s has both grown and invested in the business which today includes bakeries in Kilmarnock and Motherwell and depots in Dundee and Edinburgh.

MAN Truck & Bus UK first launched the eTGX tractor on British soil in June, at the 2024 RTX Show, this was followed by a customer ride-and-drive event at Horiba MIRA in mid-June, where over 100 customers took the opportunity to both drive the vehicle and sit through several classroom-based product information seminars. This highly focussed eTruck event helped customers further understand the leading-edge technologies on offer and discuss how MAN eTrucks can be matched to suit their individual applications.           

Roger concluded, “When we look at Electric vehicles, BEVs, we need to understand that this is the biggest change to occur in the road transport industry since the birth of the diesel engine and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. The MAN TGE will receive an extensive functional and interior update with the 2025 model year. The "truck among vans" is thus making the biggest technological leap in its history. The van from MAN Truck & Bus is getting a completely new on-board network architecture. A new generation of control units fulfils the higher cyber security requirements on the one hand and significantly increases active and passive safety for drivers and other road users with the help of new driver assistance systems on the other. The MAN TGE is thus better protected against digital manipulation and unauthorised changes to the vehicle software and is also ideally equipped for future digital online services. Another advantage is the ability for over-the-air updates. This eliminates the need for workshop visits for software updates and continuously improves software stability.

The combination of new control units and new radar sensors and cameras has also made it possible to significantly enhance the safety and driver assistance systems. For example, Blind Spot Warning and Drive Off Warning are completely new. These are now standard for all MAN TGEs over 3.5 tonnes with N2 approval and optional for vehicles with N1 approval. The optional assistance systems, Cruise Assist, Cruise Assist Plus and Turn Assist, are also new developments. In addition, almost all systems have been revised and their functions expanded. The extended list of assistance systems fitted as standard is also noteworthy. Every MAN TGE Next Level comes with Fatigue Detection, Traffic Sign Information, Intelligent Speed Assist, Emergency Brake Assist¹, Parking Assist¹, Active Lane Guard System, Cruise Control and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System. This raises the active safety of MAN vans to a new level.

Also new in the standard equipment of MAN TGE with N1 approval are the passenger airbag and an accident recording system. The latter records and stores critical, collision-related parameters and information shortly before, during and immediately after a collision. In this way, important data is available for accident investigations and analyses of the performance of safety equipment. The front passenger airbag is still available as an option for vehicles with N2 approval.

The TGE Next Level also comes with many new comfort features: a new dashboard with digital instrumentation and a large MAN Media Van touch display for controlling the vehicle functions and the infotainment system. The extensively revised vehicle electrics and electronics in combination with the new driver's workplace and the new and updated assistance systems raise the MAN TGE to a new level, which is why it was given the nickname "Next Level". Production of the first model variants will begin in June 2024, with more to follow over the course of the year.

Under the bonnet, the MAN TGE is new and future-proof with the 2025 model year. However, its striking, dynamic exterior remains virtually unchanged. MAN Truck & Bus has therefore created a subtle eye-catcher with the TGE Next Level Edition, which sets visual accents. The edition is already available to order. It consists of the launch colour Pale Copper Metallic, mirror covers in Piano Black, a boomerang trim at the bumper in silver, a "Next" badge in the front grille and 17" alloy wheels in silver or optionally in black.

In terms of drive, there is a small change in the portfolio. The 2.0 litre turbo diesel engine and the choice between manual and 8-speed automatic transmission remain the same. The previous entry-level engine of 75 kW (102 PS) will no longer be offered due to restrained customer demand. Three power levels are now available as standard: 103 kW (140 PS), 120 kW (163 PS) and 130 kW (177 PS).

The high service quality for the MAN TGE remains unchanged, with commercial vehicle-specific expertise, 24-hour breakdown service and long opening hours at many branches. The MAN ServiceCare digital service is also available with the MAN TGE Next Level for smooth communication between the vehicle operator and the workshop. MAN ServiceCare is a digital maintenance and repair management system for the vehicle operator.

The ultra-modern cockpit

The dashboard in the MAN TGE has been completely redesigned and now features a free-standing touch display in the centre. The ergonomic steering wheel, which can be used to directly select the new assistance systems, has also been redesigned. The new instrument cluster is fully digitalised as standard and offers the driver extensive options for customising displays and information.

However, the most striking highlight of the new cockpit is the new MAN Media Van infotainment system, which is the modern control centre for controlling infotainment and vehicle functions. Three variants of the infotainment system are available: The standard MAN Media Van with 10.4" screen, MAN Media Van Navigation with 10.4" screen (plus optional functions) and MAN Media Van Navigation Business with 12.9" screen (plus optional functions). The optional functions include, for example, media streaming via the Tidal streaming service and voice control. An inductive charging cradle for wireless charging of smart devices can also be ordered on request. For better communication with the rear row of seats in the crew cab, the front microphone and rear speakers can be selected. This optional function is called In-Car Communication.

DAB tuner, Bluetooth interface and MAN SmartLink for smartphone integration (Android Auto or Apple CarPlay) are installed as standard in the MAN Media Van. The latter allows selected apps to be displayed on the MAN Media Van screen and operated either directly via the touchscreen or via the MAN TGE's controls.

Other new standard features that make driving the MAN TGE even more pleasant, safer and easier include Keyless Go, electronic parking brake and two USB-C ports. Furthermore, the TGE with automatic transmission no longer has the previous gear stick. An automatic gear lever on the steering wheel is now available for selecting the driving modes. This increases the available space in the cab, as does the new electronic parking brake, which is activated via a button in the cockpit. The previous handbrake lever next to the driver's seat is no longer required. In addition, the electronic parking brake with the "Auto Hold" function secures the vehicle against rolling away when stationary by automatically engaging the parking brake without having to hold the brake pedal. This takes the strain off the driver, e.g. in stop-and-go traffic, when stopped at traffic lights or at a level crossing with an uphill or downhill gradient.

With the new Keyless Go function, the ignition is activated remotely instead of with a key. An additional button in the cockpit is used to start and stop the engine without a key. A convenient function that saves time.

Up to four new USB-C ports are available for transferring data and charging mobile devices with 45W charging power: two under the center console, one on top of the dashboard and one above the windscreen.

The assistance systems - standard equipment

With the introduction of the TGE Next Level, the number of systems available as standard has been raised to a significantly higher level. The completely new driver assistance systems Blind Spot Warning and Drive Off Warning are fitted as standard for TGEs with N2 approval and are offered as an option for TGEs with N1 approval. The blind spot warning uses radar sensors to monitor the blind spot area next to the vehicle (depending on whether the vehicle is travelling on the left or right) and reduces the risk of collision with cyclists, particularly when turning. It can optionally be extended to monitor both sides of the vehicle. The Drive Off Warning uses a multifunction camera and radar to monitor the area in front of the vehicle and helps to avoid collisions with pedestrians or cyclists when pulling away. With both systems, the driver is warned visually and acoustically.

The following systems are new to the standard equipment: Active Lane Guard System, Parking Assist, Fatigue Detection, Traffic Sign Information, Intelligent Speed Assist and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System. There are also the cruise control and speed limiter functions. And the Emergency Brake Assist is also still part of the standard equipment. This means that the MAN TGE is safer than ever, even as standard.

Active Lane Guard System

The Active Lane Guard System helps the driver to keep the vehicle in lane by correcting steering interventions. In particular, recognition of the lane boundary has been improved and now also works on the basis of the turf and roadside. The course of the lane boundaries is detected by a camera. In addition, the system warns the driver by means of steering wheel vibration or an acoustic signal if a lane boundary is crossed unintentionally.

Parking assist

The parking aid uses parking distance sensors to monitor the area in front of and behind the vehicle and supports the driver when parking by displaying the distance to static obstacles both in the instrument cluster and on the MAN Media Van screen. A new feature is that emergency braking is automatically initiated in the event of an imminent collision. No parking aid can be installed on wind-running vehicles with a flat frame.

Fatigue Detection

The Fatigue Detection system indicates to the driver both visually in the instrument cluster and on the MAN Media Van screen, as well as haptically with a brief tightening of the seat belts, a short or long-term loss of attention. The current drowsiness and distraction level and the journey time since the last break are displayed, with break recommendations and offers to find a rest area.

Traffic Sign Information

The Traffic Sign Information informs the driver in the instrument cluster and on the MAN Media Van screen about traffic signs detected by cameras or determined from navigation and route data. If the speed limit is exceeded, the driver is warned visually and acoustically.

Intelligent Speed Assist 

The Intelligent Speed Assist determines the speed limit from the activated speed limiter, recorded traffic signs and predictive route data and automatically decelerates to the speed limit. It automatically accelerates to the speed previously set in the display when the speed limit is cancelled. If the driver exceeds the speed limit manually, he receives a visual and acoustic warning.

Emergency Brake Assist

Emergency Brake Assist helps to avoid collisions with vehicles in front. It supports the driver with automatic braking, warns visually, haptically and acoustically if the distance is too short and can also initiate automatic emergency braking if the automatic transmission is fitted. The new, integrated pedestrian and cyclist detection function also extends the range of functions to other road users.

Tyre Pressure Monitoring System

The Tyre Pressure Monitoring System is now also possible with dual tyres. It determines the current tyre pressure using sensors in the wheels (new: including spare wheel) and informs the driver before and during the journey, together with a visual and acoustic warning in the event of low tyre pressure or rapid pressure loss.

The assistance systems - optional equipment

The technological advancement of the new control units, sensors and cameras installed in the vehicle enables the introduction of new and improved assistance systems. One of the main reasons for this is the increased computing power under the bonnet. With the assistance systems, the MAN TGE offers even better protection for vehicle occupants and other road users and makes a contribution to increasing road safety.

Completely new, optional driver assistance systems are the Turning Assist and Cruise Assist Plus (including Emergency Assist). Noticeable enhancements have been made to Park Steering Assist, the Rear View Camera with dynamic guidance lines, ACC Stop & Go and Emergency Assist.

Turn Assist

Turn Assist helps to avoid head-on collisions with oncoming vehicles by automatically braking when turning into the opposite lane.

Park Steering Assist

The Park Steering Assist supports the driver when parking in parallel and perpendicular parking spaces. To do this, the parking space is first detected by sensors and the appropriate size is displayed to the driver. During the assisted parking process, the driver presses the accelerator and brake pedals, the parking assistant takes over the steering and automatically initiates emergency braking if the speed is too high or a collision is imminent.

Rear View Camera

The Rear View Camera now shows the driver the surroundings behind the vehicle on the MAN Media Van screen with dynamic instead of static guide lines. This improves orientation for the driver, as the guide lines continuously adapt to the route. The higher resolution of the camera has also improved the display on the MAN Media Van screen and thus visibility.

ACC Stop & Go

ACC Stop & Go is a semi-automated control of acceleration and braking processes based on the speed set by the driver or the distance to the vehicle in front. After braking to a standstill, the system starts up semi-automatically; after a message, the driver must confirm the automatic restart by tapping the accelerator pedal. ACC Stop & Go is only available as part of Cruise Assist or Cruise Assist Plus.

Active Lane Guard System and Traffic Jam Assist

The Active Lane Guard System and Traffic Jam Assist also controls acceleration and braking based on the speed set by the driver or the distance to the vehicle in front. It also corrects steering movements to keep the vehicle in lane. After braking to a standstill, the system starts up fully automatically and automatically keeps the vehicle in the centre of the lane. Active Lane Guard System and Traffic Jam Assist are only available in conjunction with ACC Stop & Go in Cruise Assist.

Emergency Assist

Emergency Assist continuously monitors the driver's activity on the accelerator pedal, steering and brakes. If there is no driver activity in an exceptional situation - e.g. in the event of a health impairment or loss of fitness to drive - Emergency Assist can take over vehicle control to bring the vehicle to a standstill and then secure it (activate hazard warning lights, make an eCall, unlock doors).

Impending consequences such as leaving the carriageway, rear-end collisions and endangering other road users can thus be averted within the system limits.

Emergency Assist is only available in conjunction with ACC Stop & Go in Cruise Assist Plus and therefore only for vehicles with automatic transmission.

Cruise Assist

Cruise Assist combines the functions of ACC Stop & Go, Active Lane Guard System and Traffic Jam Assist to help the driver maintain distance, speed and lane position. To this end, the semi-automated control of acceleration and braking processes is combined with the lateral control of steering movements for lane keeping.

Cruise Assist Plus

Cruise Assist Plus consists of the functions of ACC Stop & Go as well as Emergency Assist, Active Lane Guard System and Traffic Jam Assist. It is only available for vehicles with automatic transmission.

Lane Change Assist

Lane Change Assist supports the driver when changing lanes by actively monitoring the surrounding area - now with a significantly larger detection range thanks to new sensors. In addition, the integrated warning now provides even better support against rear cross traffic when reversing out of an exit or parking space and automatically initiates emergency braking in the event of an imminent collision. In both cases, collisions with other vehicles can be effectively avoided. Lane Change Assist is only available for panel vans.

Torsten succeeds Chris Sharp who is taking up the position of General Manager MAN Sales & Support at MAN Truck & Bus in Australia.

Torsten joined MAN Truck & Bus in Munich in 2010 as a Sales Trainee, and took over the position as Head of Strategy and Business Development for MAN TopUsed in 2011.  From 2014 until 2018, Torsten worked in Berlin and took over the operative responsibility for three TopUsed Centers as Head of Sales Used Region East. In 2018, Torsten moved back to Munich as Head of Used Truck responsible for the worldwide development of the Used truck business within MAN Truck & Bus SE.

Toni succeeds Tracey Perry who starts a new position as the Sales Director of Truck, Bus & Coach products for MAN Truck & Bus UK Ltd.

With over 20 years in the automotive sector within both network and OEM, Toni brings a wealth of experience. During this time she has led successful teams in Retail, SME and had responsibility for the supply and account management of some of the largest commercial fleets in the UK.

Between 1998 and 2006 Toni worked for Reg Vardy PLC, before joining Fiat UK as a National Account Manager in 2008. In 2011 she joined Renault before joining Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles UK in 2015 as a Key Account Manager. Toni joined MAN Truck & Bus UK in January 2022 as Head of Van Sales (Region North).

The new vehicles, 10 chassis cabs with bespoke Luton bodies and 30 panel vans, join the expanding Wrights fleet of 145 vehicles, 100 of these being MAN products.

Established in 2016 Wrights of Northampton, an independent family-run business, pride themselves in offering quality and reliable vehicles and a customer focussed personalised level of service. From their 2.5-acre premises, depending upon their individual requirements, customers can hire small car-derived vans, LWB 3.5-tonne panel vans and Luton vans both with and without Tail lifts. They also offer 7.5-tonne Box and Curtainsiders, with and without tail lifts.

Richard continued, “Majority of our business is serving the self-drive and hire needs of customers in local towns and villages across the area, including Wellingborough, Towcester, Bletchley, Rushden, Daventry, Corby and Milton Keynes. As a family business, under the expertise of John Leaney our Vehicle hire Manager, we offer a personalised booking service and can cater for any occasion, be it a customer moving home, therefore, needing the square space and volume of a Luton, or the simple collection of an oversized household product, such as a three-piece suite, a wardrobe or an oversized flat-screen Television, where a standard panel van will do.”   

This latest vehicle order, of 40 vehicles in total, includes six MAN TGE 3.140, 4,490 mm wheelbase, Chassis Cabs, four MAN TGE 3.140, 4,490 mm wheelbase, Flatframe Chassis Cowls and 30 Long wheelbase 3.140 panel Vans. The Flatframe Chassis Cowls, due to their reduced chassis heights, are 190 mm lower than the standard chassis cabs. All of the vehicles are front-wheel drive models.

Upon arrival the 10 TGE chassis were despatched directly to two individual body builders. Four standard height chassis went to JC Paine in the West Midlands and were bodied with 4.2 metre Luton bodies featuring wide lath roller shutter doors, an aerodynamic pod above the cab, and 500 kg tail lifts. Six vehicles, two long wheelbase standard height chassis and the four reduced height Flatframe Chassis Cowls, went to Commercial Vehicle Bodies in Northampton. Commercial Vehicle Bodies bodied the Flatframe Chassis Cowls with 4.2 metre walk-in walk-out Luton’s, featuring barn doors, allowing for maximum aperture space and a kerbside door. These too all have aerodynamic pods above the cabs. 

Richard added, “Our customers like driving the TGE because of its car-like driving characteristics, the high level of comfort, its ease of use and the high amount of clear vision. They also openly comment on how frugal the vehicles are, making their self-drive period, be it a day hire or a longer term hire, incredibly cost-effective and efficient.”

All the new vehicles are powered by the efficient, reliable and robust MAN Euro6D 140 hp (103 kW) 2.0 litre 4 cylinder turbo diesel engines, which are capable of producing 340 Nm. They all feature the optional eight-speed automatic transmission and the much acclaimed and award-winning, ergonomically designed well-appointed MAN TGE cabs.

As a long-term fan of the MAN Van brand, Richard said, “When purchasing a MAN TGE you know exactly what you’re getting, they’re efficient, reliable and robust. All the Wrights of Northampton vehicles are ordered to a high specification, this includes extras such as Satellite navigation, Apple Car Play, Air conditioning, Cruise control, Speed limiter, Overhead storage and the silky smooth eight-speed automatic transmission.

“Customers prefer a highly specified vehicle with easy to understand controls, especially for things like air conditioning, heating and navigation. We’re constantly told that the TGE feels very familiar and very Audi and VW car like, this makes the handover process very easy.” Concluded Richard.

To ensure a safe environment for both driver and passengers, all of the vehicles are fitted with ABS and ESP, Crosswind assist, Multi-collision brake and integrated reversing cameras. To ensure customer goods are secured the bodies have been fitted with both floor and wall lashing points.

Tracey has extensive experience in the Automotive Industry within both network and OEM, having lead teams in Retail Sales, SME and Corporate Sales. Between 1989 and 1998 Tracey worked with our sister company Audi, before joining Renault in 2001. In 2007 Tracey joined FCA Fiat Professional and in 2015 she joined the Volkswagen Group as National Fleet Sales Manager, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles UK.

Powered by a 177 PS (130 kW) 2.0 litre 4 cylinder turbo diesel engine, linked to an 8 Speed automatic gearbox, this vehicle has a 4490 mm wheelbase and is in rear wheel drive, dual tyre, format. Equipment includes: AGM battery and alternator with increased capacity, Body builder socket (KFG module), 2nd AGM battery with cut-off relay and battery monitoring, Heated & electrical adjustable mirrors, Windshield wipers with rain sensor and automatic headlights, Driver & front passenger airbags, Air conditioning climatic, Multi-function steering wheel, Seat trim covers in leatherette, Overhead storage compartment, Cruise control system with speed limiter and Satellite navigation with DAB radio & wireless CarPlay.

This 5.5 tonne Breathing Apparatus Support Vehicle has been built by Angloco Ltd, specialists in the design and manufacture of fire-fighting and rescue vehicles. The body specification includes: Angloco CanBus electrical system installation, Fixed and sliding shelves, with tilt capability and breathing, Apparatus stowage, Lockers to incorporate lift up roller shutters complete with central locking, Rear Sink facilities for the wash down of Breathing Apparatus Sets, 100 litres of Clean Water Storage, 200 litres of Waste Water Storage, Electric Awnings and a Roof mounted light mast.

In addition to the above vehicles emergency service vehicle specialists VCS are unveiling a ground-breaking concept based on a new Ultra Low Floor Architecture (ULFA) platform, developed by sister company Promech Technologies. The all new ULFA platform’s construction, in the livery of St John Ambulance and based on a 5.180 MAN TGE, offers a combination of strength, versatility and accessibility as never seen before in the emergency services sector (stand F29).

Leading infrastructure services and engineering company Amey PLC, has just taken delivery of five new MAN TGE based TRISS (Trunk Roads Incident Support Service) vehicles.

The new Amey MAN TGE TRISS vehicles will be based across Scotland’s busiest trunk roads and motorways and will assist Transport Scotland in providing critical support and advanced information to road users. Historically the TRISS fleet has supported and rescued thousands of stranded motorists, removed countless hazards from the road network and have helped keep traffic moving by delivering reliable minute-by-minute traffic updates.

Pioneered and trialled by Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland, and rolled out across Scotland’s road network in 2005, the TRISS function has evolved into a service which is fundamental to Scotland’s road infrastructure, immeasurably improving safety for road users and reducing the impact of disruption caused by incidents.

Jason Clement, Fleet Supply Chain Manager at Amey, said; “In 2005 our team worked with Transport Scotland and Police Scotland to develop a unique trunk roads service designed solely to support motorists and the emergency services with the ultimate aim of keeping Scotland moving and improving road user safety.

“Today with the arrival of these new vehicles we can further enhance our TRISS operation, which has gone from strength to strength and has proven essential in reducing the impact of disruption caused by incidents. These latest vehicles, with their cutting edge technologies, will ensure we continue to offer a high level of support to the many motorists across the region.”

The MAN TGE 3.180 vans have been converted to TRISS specification by vehicle conversion specialists Qi Van Systems Limited, based in Telford. Starting with a 3.640mm, standard wheelbase panel van, Qi lined the inside of the vehicles with polypropylene and added an anti-slip phenolic floors, storage racking units also were added. A full suite of R65 approved lighting was installed, including two Amber LED Lightbars, Amber LED lights mounted to the front grill and rear door pillars, four scene lights, one swivel work lamp and two internal load area PIR lights. All lighting is controlled via a Vigil Link control system which has an interface touch control monitor screen fitted.

A RACAM mobile CCTV Camera and monitor is fitted with powered masts which allows the CCTV camera to be raised and lowered as required through the vehicles roof. For safety these feature both an audible and an LED warning, warning the driver that the mast needs to be lowered back into place before driving the vehicle. Rennicks UK supplied the roof mounted LED Variable Message Sign board along with a controller interface, this allows the TRISS vehicle crew to update and enhance road user information during road closures and traffic incidents.

For both crew comfort and welfare QI fitted a 12 volt hand wash system, paper towel dispensers, first aid kits, dry powder fire extinguishers, coat hooks, 12 volt power sockets and USB charging points. All five feature the optional 8 speed automatic transmission, air-conditioning and smart tachographs for towing capabilities.

Jason added; “The many major trunk roads and motorways that cross Scotland are, as you can imagine, heavily trafficked, and our integrated TRISS system helps maximise both traffic flow and road user safety, which at the same time, very much helps support the economy by keeping everyone moving.

“Our Incident Support Operation, with the assistance of our TRISS vehicle fleet, enables us to quickly and efficiently arrive at the scene of an incident, accident or scene of congestion. Once set up we start beaming information to the relevant parties, assist with the management of the safe flow of traffic and attend to the safety of any involved motorists.

“All of the TRISS vehicles are manned by a team of highly experienced people, whom are trained to provide critical support to road users.” Jason added.

Once the TRISS team are on scene and functional they start beaming live feed video footage to the 24/7 staffed support office as well as both Transport Scotland and the blue light services. This visual high definition information assists with instant updates ensuring that the correct remedial action can be taken by all parties involved.

The vehicles have been procured through Hitachi Capital (UK) PLC. Working with both MAN and Qi on behalf of Amey, Hitachi took full responsibility for the evaluation of the vehicles, the quality of the complex conversion and the entire body build process, ensuring that the end product was specified and built to meet the exacting bespoke needs of Amey’s TRISS operation.

Hitachi have also project managed the installation of the RACAM camera and video systems and the Rennicks Variable Message sign board, again ensuring that these fitted Amey’s exacting TRISS operation requirement. Hitachi will also be responsible for both planning and monitoring the routine maintenance and operational support of the vehicles throughout their functioning lives.

“We have a great working relationship with MAN and have known their TGE International Key Account Manager, John Seddon, for a number of years,” commented Jason.

“When we initially looked at the MAN TGE for our TRISS operation we looked at the added values that MAN offer, these being value for money, customer satisfaction and a truly dedicated 24/7 commercial vehicle focused dealer network. It was obvious that MAN’s commitment to customer service is a mirror image of what we offer our customers throughout our business.

MAN Truck & Bus UK has announced the appointment of Stefan Thyssen as Managing Director of MAN Truck & Bus UK Ltd.

Stefan Thyssen succeeds Thomas Hemmerich who has been appointed the role of Managing Director for the National Sales Company, Korea, which also includes responsibility for the Austral/Asia region.

Currently Head of MAN Truck & Bus Scandinavia, Stefan Thyssen will take up his new position on 1^st July 2021.

Stefan began his career with MAN Truck & Bus in 2007. He has worked in a variety of roles including Business Development, Corporate Planning, Program Management and Group Controlling, all based out of MAN Truck & Bus, Munich, Germany. In 2017 Stefan moved to MAN Truck & Bus UK, into the role of Finance Director, based at UK headquarters in Swindon. In 2020, Stefan became Managing Director of MAN Scandinavia, covering the markets of Denmark, Norway and Sweden, based in Copenhagen.

. Commercial vehicles well-suited for photovoltaic integration thanks to large areas

MAN Truck & Bus and Sono Motors have signed a Letter of Intent. The two companies have agreed to investigate the technical and economic feasibility of integrating the Sono Solar technology into MAN's eTGE electric transporter.

"It is a great opportunity for Sono Motors to team up with such a respected industry partner as MAN and to work together for a more sustainable future. Our Sono Solar technology offers a lightweight and adaptable platform that is ideal for light commercial vehicles such as MAN's battery-powered eTGE," says Jona Christians, co-founder and CEO of Sono Motors. "We look forward to all the opportunities that these two sustainable technologies can bring together."

Three applications are to be equipped with Sono Solar technology and investigated by the companies:

- MAN eTGE panel van

- MAN eTGE combi with a powerful on-roof air conditioning system

- MAN eTGE with a refrigeration system

For all three concepts, the focus is either on additional range to be achieved or on a self-sufficient supply of auxiliary users, e.g the air conditioning system, through the acquired solar energy.

Dennis Affeld, Senior Vice President & Head of Sales Truck & Van at MAN Truck & Bus, is pleased with the partnership with Sono Motors, which is now underway: "We will pool our joint know-how and expertise to test various prototypes with vehicle-integrated photovoltaic technology. The aim is to find out how much energy can be gained from PV technology over the year. The eTGE is MAN's answer for urban and regional operations. It does not cause on-site emissions and is significantly quieter in operation compared to an internal combustion engine drive. Depending on the annual mileage, the eTGE can be operated more economically than a comparable diesel TGE: after about four years, it pays for itself.

Sono Solar Technology offers a lightweight, robust and cost-effective solar solution that can adapt to a range of complex geometries thanks to its polymer-based design. Due to the larger surface area compared to passenger cars on vehicles such as trucks, vans or buses, the panels are particularly suitable for commercial applications, like Last-Mile-Delivery. The vehicle-integrated photovoltaic solutions (ViPV) are not, however, intended to replace existing energy storage systems such as batteries or fuel cells. They can reduce energy requirements and the number of charging intervals required, thus extending the range. Furthermore, it is conceivable that the solar energy obtained will be utilised for auxiliary users such as heating, air conditioning or refrigeration units.

Based on MAN TGE flat frame chassis cowls, the 3.5-tonners have been fitted by Bevan Group with crash-tested bulkheads and innovative plastic bodies which, as well as being easily cleaned inside and out, are also impressively light.

Early duties will include supplying vital medical equipment to satellite sites, from where it is despatched to re-stock ambulances. Once the events calendar in England picks up again, the vehicles can be assigned to their primary role - ensuring that St John Ambulance volunteers have all they need to provide their potentially life-saving support.

The front-wheel drive MAN sits 190mm lower than a standard TGE chassis cab, while the newly-crowned Commercial Motor Bodybuilder of the Year's plastic box is bonded directly to the chassis, rather than being bolted onto a sub-frame in the conventional manner.

This meant Bevan Group could devise a drawbridge-style, full closure rear door that doubles as a ramp - the relatively shallow load angle allows heavy equipment to be winched onto the load bed. This solution is easy to use and offers a further, valuable weight saving over a tail-lift that would require two LOLER inspections each year, and specific training for operatives.

As a result, the charity's first purpose-built logistics vehicles comfortably exceed the 1.0-tonne payload target set out by National Fleet Manager Rob MacIntosh and his team at the beginning of the project.

Strategically based at St John Ambulance locations nationwide, the vehicles carry everything required to build and kit out mobile medical centres at major events and incident scenes. The on-board inventory includes defibrillators, oxygen cylinders, wheelchairs and stretchers, as well as generators and inflatable shelters, all of which is stowed on shelving and in cages.

The doctors, nurses, paramedics and first aiders who freely give their own time to keep communities safe provide a medical service that includes triage, assessment and primary care, as well as potentially life-saving initial care in cases of critical illness and major trauma.

Mr MacIntosh said that in the past St John Ambulance had used two or three panel vans to do the same job as one of the new logistics vehicles, or 7.5-tonne trucks which it had now stood down because of the requirement for drivers without 'grandfather rights' to have an additional C1 entitlement on their licences.

"The challenge, therefore, was to come up with a 3.5-tonne concept capable of fulfilling this role," he recalled. "The vehicle as delivered is entirely fit-for-purpose - everything has a place on the body, and we've been undertaking familiarisation training with volunteers from all over the country, so they understand how best to remove and return equipment as efficiently as possible."

Air-conditioned and fitted with satellite navigation systems and DAB radios, the MAN TGEs are powered by 140 hp engines which are paired, in most cases, with eight-speed automatic gearboxes. To ensure compliance, Bevan Group also installed axle load weighing systems.

MAN is forging a new partnership with St John Ambulance. The eight logistics vehicles are the first to be commissioned, but the manufacturer will be supplying vans of other sizes and specifications over the coming months, as the charity continues to upgrade its fleet.

MAN recommended the West Midlands-based Bevan Group to its customer. TGE - International & National Key account Manager Dan George explained: "We selected a sub-contractor that shares our own premium values, and could be relied upon to produce a body able to withstand an arduous 10-year life cycle.

"Having worked successfully with the bodybuilder's team on other projects involving not only TGE but also heavier models from our product range, we know that its excellent reputation within the industry is well merited.

"What's more, its market-leading five-year warranty confirms that Bevan Group is prepared to 'put its money where its mouth is' when it comes to standing by the quality and consistency of its work."

St John Ambulance's Rob MacIntosh added: "Our initial build interpretation meeting with MAN and Bevan Group marked the beginning of a consultative process in which with all three parties worked together extremely well.

The innovative MAN coronavirus test vehicle will make a vital contribution to containing the Covid-19 pandemic by providing fast PCR test results on site. The quicker that everyone involved at a new coronavirus hotspot are tested, including all the suspected cases, the more effectively outbreaks and any further spread of the virus can be stopped. In addition to easy planning of the mobile test vehicle's deployment, the speed of the tests is another advantage of this innovative product. With the innovative molecular diagnostic PCR test equipment Vivalytic from Bosch Healthcare Solutions on board the MAN TGE, test results are available within 39 minutes. These PCR test devices are currently among the fastest approved devices on the market. The entire process including smear, sample preparation and testing therefore takes less than an hour.

When deployed for mobile use, for example at border crossings along the motorway, the MAN coronavirus test vehicle displays another of its strengths: flexibility. Test capacities can, for example, be quickly relocated as required and deployed exactly where they are needed. The mobile test vehicle is also digital. Four tasks can be performed in it in one continuous process: swab sampling, testing, analysis and communication. The PCR test results are digitally transferred from the test device to a laptop in real time. That enables a quick report to be sent directly from the MAN van to the responsible health authorities, departments, or to the person tested.

Two different vehicle designs are available: one with a standard wheelbase and 3.5 t gross combination weight and one with a long wheelbase and 5.5 t gross combination weight. The short version serves as a mobile diagnostic vehicle and is equipped with up to 16 Vivalytic test devices by aprimeo diagnostics, a Bosch distribution partner involved in the development. The Bosch Vivalytic test devicesare used in specially manufactured rack systems. The swab tests are taken outside the vehicle where qualified medical staff take care of the patients. This deployment scenario, with a high throughput of people being tested, is especially suitable for care homes, schools, large events or companies.

The impressive feature of the long version is that it is highly flexible in its use, with a separate room for taking swabs located inside the vehicle and awnings on both sides to create additional capacity. This enables a quicker and more frequent change of location. The long version is equipped with 8 PCR test devices. In order to maintain a one-way system when taking swabs, the MAN TGE has been equipped with two automatic lateral sliding doors.

The mobile MAN coronavirus test vehicle is powered by a 2.0 l turbo diesel engine with 177 hp. It can be optionally provided with all-wheel drive and an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The standard fittings include hygienic surfaces, automatic sliding doors, air conditioning system and an auxiliary air-conditioning system as well as an automatic step. As optional extras, the vehicle can be equipped with up to two washbasins (for the test and swab room), a computer workstation with a 220 V connection and a refrigerator.

Both vehicles are fitted with a MAN TeleMatics box to enable internet access. Other equipment options include:

In this project, it is not only the vehicle that is unique but also the rapid collaboration from recognised experts in their field. The result is an innovative, practical overall system to contain the coronavirus pandemic. The idea and concept for the mobile coronavirus test vehicle comes from Leeloo Medical and MAN Truck & Bus. The ambulance service provider, MKT-Krankentransport, has contributed its expertise in dealing with patients. MAN and AMS Ambulanzmobile are converting the vehicles in line with medical and epidemiological standards. The inspection and risk assessment of the vehicle was carried out by an expert for epidemiological protection from the Medizinischen Katastrophen-Hilfswerk Deutschland e.V. (MHW). And finally, MAN Truck & Bus has contributed its decades of expertise in implementing special vehicle concepts and their marketing.

The new MAN coronavirus test vehicle for rapid SARS-CoV-2 test results can be used throughout Europe (EU 27+3) and is now available to order. The first two test vehicles were completed in October 2020.
