Whether it's travelling within a city from bus stop to bus stop or regional travel between cities - people expect buses to get them to their destinations quickly, flexibly and reliably. THE WAY PEOPLE TRAVEL is the slogan under which the well-known bus brands MAN and NEOPLAN present themselves. MAN draws on more than 90 years' experience of commercial vehicle manufacture. The premium brand NEOPLAN offers attractively designed coaches built to a high level of comfort and safety. MAN and NEOPLAN brand bus chassis and complete buses are developed and produced at plants in Germany, Mexico, Poland, South Africa and Turkey. There are also licensees in various countries.
Buses of the MAN brand are designed especially for reliable, efficient and cost-conscious operation in all areas of local, intercity and touring transport. MAN's city buses and its competence in engines and suspensions enjoy a world-wide reputation. These components are also highly regarded by many other bus manufacturers in the important chassis area. Almost the entire range of buses is equipped with the most modern and cleanest EEV (Enhanced Environmentally-friendly Vehicle) engines, which are based on the additive-free MAN PURE DIESEL® technology. Their exhaust-gas values are better than those stipulated by the Euro 5 standard currently in force. With large-capacity concepts such as the overlong articulated buses or the biggest regular service double-decker in Europe, MAN city buses contribute meaningfully to the reduction of per-head CO2 emissions (values of under 10 g up to 50 g per passenger-kilometre). Alternative and innovative drive systems such as diesel-electric hybrid drives, natural gas and biogas engines are currently in the focus of the brand and will shape the future of local transport for many years to come. The city bus in particular is predestined for such drives and is leading the way internationally.
The MAN Lion's City range of city buses
The wide range of low-floor city buses starts with the 12-metre MAN Lion's City model. Like all the other buses in the range, it is also available as an adapted intercity variant. The model with vertical 290-hp D08 common-rail engine in tower design comes with either two or three doors. This model also offers advantages in terms of maximum seating and standing capacity, which is some 15 to 20 percent greater than that of the horizontal-engine models.
New in the range with effect from autumn 2011 is the 10.5-m long MAN Lion's City M midibus, in two- and three-door versions. EEV-compliant 250-hp and 290-hp engines are installed. With its short wheelbase of 4.39 metres, this MAN bus meets the demanding challenges in terms of manoeuvrability posed by urban traffic.
The classic member of the series is undoubtedly the low-floor MAN Lion's City solo bus with the horizontal MAN D20 common-rail engine in underfloor design. Offered here are EEV-compliant engines with outputs of 280, 320 and 360 hp equipped with the electronically-controlled, clog-free CRTec® particulate filter. This filters out almost all of even the smallest particles from the exhaust gas. Important prizes for design such as two iF awards and the title "Bus of the Year 2005" say it all.
The Euro 6 engine for horizontal installation in the MAN Lion's City is being premiered at the Busworld in Kortrijk 2011 and can be ordered from 2012 on. MAN has successfully integrated the new Euro 6 exhaust-gas cleaning technology for the 320-hp engine from the D20 series in such a way that no seats will lost. The engine unites the two technologies that have proven themselves at MAN: EGR (cooled exhaust-gas recirculation) and SCR (selective catalytic reduction). Two components were newly developed by MAN and integrated into the city bus: the MAN-SCRT system - a compact exhaust-gas aftertreatment system – and the on-board diagnostics stipulated for Euro 6, with permanent emission control and multi-stage monitoring of the urea additive AdBlue.
Besides the 18-metre Lion's City G standard articulated bus, for some years now the MAN Lion's City GL has also been available. This articulated bus is unique on the market: with the maximum permitted length of 18.75 metres it carries an additional 14 passengers.
Two more interesting models with three axles and thus big capacities are the 14.7-metre long MANLion's City Land the new, one metre shorter Lion's City C (13.7 metres), both of which have an actively steered third axle. The shorter vehicle length is outstanding for its improved compactness and greater manoeuvrability with a comparable passenger capacity.
A new variant of the successful Lion's City series now available is the Low Entry model, which has proven itself in both city and intercity operation. This model is designed especially for customers who prefer operating vehicles with low entrance heights. It meets the demand expressed by customers for more seats facing in the direction of travel and a pleasant, raised sitting position. The vehicle, produced in MAN's Polish plant in Starachowice, is available as a three-axle model in lengths of 13.7 and 14.7 metres and as an articulated bus in lengths of 18 and 18.75 metres. There is a choice of various engines ranging from 310 to 360 hp. An advantage of the MAN Lion's City LE is that at 2.88 metres, it has the lowest overall height of any bus on the market, enabling it pass under the lowest of obstacles in the inner cities. All the variants are also offered with eco-friendly gas-powered engines.
The MAN Lion’s City DD double-decker city bus has more than forty years of MAN double-decker competence behind it. The "Big Yellows" from MAN have been a famous sight on Berlin's streets for many years. Over 400 of them have been delivered to the German capital since 2010.
The MAN Lion's City LE intercity bus
The Ankara plant is where the 12-metre long low-entry Lion's City LE city and intercity buses are produced. These are particularly economical vehicles to operate with their hypoid rear axles and EEV-compliant versions of the 290-hp vertical D08 engines because there is no need for complex underfloor components. Passengers sit higher up at the back, just like in a coach, while the area in front of Door 2 has a low floor throughout and is suitable for older or physically challenged passengers. And so the best of both worlds is combined in a single modern vehicle.
MAN Lion's City Hybrid: the series version of the drive of the future
Since the IAA 2010, MAN has been offering the Lion's City Hybrid to European customers. The bus is already operating successfully in regular service in various major European cities. The hybrid bus in MAN's fleet has a particular standing, one that has been recognised in the form of several awards. For the attractive design of the bus MAN received the coveted "red dot award: product design 2011", while in Spain, it was voted "Autobús del Año 2011". The panel of judges for the renowned environmental prize "OekoGlobe 2011" awarded the MAN Lion's City Hybrid bus third prize in the category "Vehicle innovations in public transport".
The major part in the winning of these awards was played by the serial hybrid technology, which reduces diesel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 30 percent. Operation in urban traffic is the ideal scenario for the utilisation of braking energy. City buses accelerate an untold number of times to a speed of between 40 and 50 kilometres an hour, only to decelerate to a standstill again shortly afterwards. Conventional buses transform the kinetic energy to wasted heat when they decelerate, while the MAN Lion's City Hybrid stores the braking energy in its ultracap high-performance energy storage system to accelerate quietly away from the bus stop again, protecting the environment as it does so. Depending on the charge of the ultracaps, the extent to which the vehicle is loaded and the topography, the hybrid bus can run up to several hundred metres purely on electricity. This means that local residents and passengers in the immediate vicinity of the bus stops are largely spared noise and exhaust gas. However, it isn't only near bus stops that the integrated start/stop system saves valuable fuel. The MAN Lion's City Hybrid is also suitable for operation with second generation biofuels, which improves the already exemplary CO2 balance still further. At an average mileage of 60,000 kilometres per year the MAN hybrid bus saves the environment approximately around 10,000 litres of diesel fuel or up to 26 tonnes of greenhouse gas.
MAN is the market leader in natural-gas-powered city bus engines
For several years already, MAN's natural-gas engines have bettered the requirements of the voluntary EEV (Enhanced Environmentally-friendly Vehicle) standard by a good margin, without having to employ complex exhaust-gas aftertreatment systems. CNG engines from MAN are very much a future-oriented solution to enable operation in inner-city environmental zones. MAN is the market leader, having sold over 5,000 gas-powered buses and bus chassis with gas-powered engines. The foundations of this success are the natural-gas powered engines of the E08 and E28 series. The E08 engine with a capacity of 6.9 litres is produced in three output classes: 220 hp, 250 hp and 280 hp. This engine, which weighs a mere 650 kilograms dry, is currently offered by MAN exclusively to external bus manufacturers for installation in their products. As standard, the natural-gas-powered buses built by MAN are propelled by 12.8-litre E28 engines, which are available with outputs of 272 and 310 hp.
The MAN Lion's Regio intercity bus
One of the highly successful models in the MAN range is the Lion's Regio. In regular service during the week, on excursions over the weekend, this vehicle is a double-income earner. For the seventh time in a row it was the readers' choice as the top intercity bus in an annual poll of the best commercial vehicles carried out by a German publishing group. With a floor height of 860 mm and a vehicle height of 3.4 metres it is ideal in its role in the intercity segment, while at the same time being configurable for excursions, with coach seating, galley and toilet. With windows that extend extremely far down, the prize-winning modern design combines the elements of a regular-service bus with the attributes of a full-blooded touring coach. The vehicle is available as a two-axle version in both lengths of 12.26 metres with 55 seats and 13 metres with up to 59 seats. As a three-axle vehicle, the Regio L is 13.90 metres long and has space for a maximum of 63 seats. It is fitted with an interchangeable platform and optionally with a wheelchair lift in the rear entrance. The MAN Lion's Regio is based on the fully-fledged and rugged MAN coach chassis, which is what makes it especially suitable for its all-round deployment. As in the city bus, horizontal MAN D20 common-rail engines are fitted. The 320-hp and 360-hp versions with electronically-controlled CRTec® particulate filter even meet the voluntary EEV standard, a highly regarded attribute particularly in public transport. In addition there is a 400-hp engine which, in conjunction with the maintenance-free MAN PM-KAT®, complies with the Euro 5 standard. Safety is also written large in the MAN Lion's Regio: an electronic braking system (EBS) with braking assistant is standard, the electronic stability program (ESP) is optional.
MAN coaches – economical and rugged
For many years now, MAN coaches in the Lion's Coach range have been distinguished by their reputation for combining great reliability and ruggedness with visual elegance. Several world-famous football clubs use them as a comfortable team coaches. Of all the coaches, those equipped with the top-of-the-range Supreme design package really know how to please, with the sickle-like aluminium element on their B pillars that distinguishes the brand and the chrome highlighter on their radiators with its MAN-typical ribbing. With a height of 3.80 metres this range of coaches is ready for anything. A luggage compartment with a capacity of 10 to 11.5 cubic metres holds everything the passengers want to take with them on the trip. This reliable and elegant tourist coach has a level floor and provides ample space to carry between 44 and 63 passengers. As a two-axle version it has a length of 12 metres, as a three-axle version 13.26 and 13.80 metres. Power comes from the impressive MAN common-rail engines with the patented MAN PM KAT® which deliver from 400 to 480 hp. In AdBlue®-free MAN PURE DIESEL® technology they meet the strictest EEV emission standard. The engines can be teamed with either the standard six-speed manual transmission or the 12-speed MAN TipMatic® Coach automated transmission. The outlook for 2012 includes the introduction of Euro 6 engines for MAN touring coaches. The standard of safety achieved by MAN coaches is unparalleled: roll-over protection in line with ECE R66, electronic braking system with braking assistant and maximum speed control (MSC) as well as ESP all go without saying.
NEOPLAN coaches – world-renowned for over 75 years
In 2010, the NEOPLAN premium bus brand celebrated its 75th anniversary. NEOPLAN has been a part of MAN since 2001 and since 2009 has been concentrating mainly on the market for premium coaches. With its "VIP Class" claim, NEOPLAN stands for exclusive touring coaches that set standards in technology, ergonomics and design, almost entirely "Made in Germany.
The Cityliner, Starliner and new Skyliner all share a common feature: the striking, so-called "Sharp Cut" design. Clear lines and clean edges in glass and metal give the NEOPLAN buses their unmistakeable look. Their aerodynamic design has won the NEOPLAN buses several prestigious international honours such as the red dot and the iF Award. The "Coach of the Year" title and wins in several readers' polls run by trade magazines show what a positive impression NEOPLAN buses make on trade journalists and bus operators. By tradition, the NEOPLAN brand is synonymous with innovation and technological progress and will continue to be so in future. Innovative safety systems like ESP, ACC and LGS were first used in NEOPLAN vehicles. The practical multifunction steering wheel, comfort drive suspension and active cornering lights were firsts by NEOPLAN in the entire bus market. In conjunction with the top-class MAN components chassis and engine, steered trailing axle, compact rear and the new ergonomic cockpit, NEOPLAN's VIP Driving concept is the benchmark for driveability and handling.
The peak performer: NEOPLAN Starliner
The NEOPLAN Starliner, the brand's innovative flagship, is now a fixture on Europe’s roads with its distinctive "Sharp Cut" design. The coach was completely redeveloped in 2004 and now represents the acme of what the coach market currently has to offer. With its design, NEOPLAN defined a distinctive formal language that cleverly plays with faces and edges and gives the Starliner such an unmistakeable character among touring coaches. The faceting of the upper panorama windows and the largest curved windscreen ever to be installed in a bus make the passenger compartment bright and transparent. Angled slightly inwards, the new, tinted panorama windows enhance the impression of wide-open space. Inside the NEOPLAN Starliner one sees just how comfortable coach travel can be for passengers. With seat spacing of 900 mm (5-star standard) it provides up to 46 seats, while the 4-star spacing of 830 mm provides room for 50 seats in addition to those for driver and courier in each case. Generously dimensioned, lockable luggage flaps create an aircraft-like ambience and of course, safely stow all hand baggage. The NEOPLAN Starliner is available in two lengths, 12.99 and 13.99 metres. The two have in common the 505-hp six-cylinder in-line engine, which complies with the demanding EEV emission standard, thanks to AdBlue®-free MAN PURE DIESEL® technology. The Euro 6 variant of this engine will be presented in 2012.
The evergreen: NEOPLAN Cityliner
Since 1971, the NEOPLAN Cityliner has been the standard against which others in the upper middle-class segment of the coach market are measured, selling as it has 8,000 units. In 2007, the current model was the first bus ever to win the "red dot: best of the best" international design prize. With the design feature typical of the NEOPLAN, the "Sharp Cut" above the side windows, its simple elegance and dynamic lines, the Cityliner caused a sensation at its launch at IAA 2006. The basic model in the series is the two-axle Cityliner, whose 12.24-metre length offers space for up to 55 passengers. Thanks to its extra 75 centimetres of length, the three-axle Cityliner C is significantly more spacious and has greater payload reserves. Depending on the equipment variant, it has space for between 50 and 55 passengers. Top of the range is the three-axle Cityliner L with a length of 13.99 metres and a baggage compartment measuring around 11.4 cubic metres. Engines for the NEOPLAN Cityliner range from 400 hp to 440 and 480 hp. They all meet the demanding EEV emissions standard thanks to AdBlue®-free MAN PURE DIESEL® technology. Its electro-hydraulically steered trailing axle gives the three-axle NEOPLAN Cityliner a small turning circle as well as great ease of manoeuvrability with low tyre wear.
Safety and assistant systems make a valuable contribution to avoiding accidents or minimising their consequences. The NEOPLAN Cityliner can be equipped with the electronic stability program, braking assistant, maximum speed limiter, electronically controlled comfort drive suspension, adaptive cruise control and lane guard system. A further safety factor is the light concept of the Cityliner, which, as the first coach in its class, is fitted with a cornering light which considerably improves vision in tight bends and when turning off with its enlarged light cone. If desired the modular headlights can also be fitted with bi-xenon lights.
The interior continues the attractive proportions of the coachwork. Thanks to the high, freely suspended luggage racks and the ceilings, which are vaulted upwards towards the side windows, the impression created in the passenger compartment is extremely generous. The high-quality material and the smooth lines create a superbly elegant ambience.
Similarly to the NEOPLAN Starliner, the Cityliner can also be upgraded even further to the customer's specifications with the NEOPLAN individual range of fittings. Among the top-class design features are wood and carbon inlays throughout the vehicle, stainless-steel bumpers and chrome applications in the front. Moreover, functional features such as the top-quality 2+1 seating or the real wood floor (available for the NEOPLAN Starliner) and a stand-up kitchen behind Door 2 underscore its claim of being attractive to the individualists among bus operators.
The NEOPLAN Tourliner as a rugged touring coach
The range of coaches is rounded off by the NEOPLAN Tourliner, which is based on proven MAN technology and is highly thought of throughout Europe as an alternative for price-conscious buyers. This robust coach boasts all the usual NEOPLAN virtues and comes with the entry-level MAN D20 common-rail engine, which delivers 400 hp and a maximum torque of 1,900 Nm. A 440-hp engine is also available. The three-axle NEOPLAN Tourliner C and Tourliner L coaches are equipped with 440-hp and 480-hp MAN D26 common-rail engines. The coach is available in three different lengths, 12, 13.26 and 13.80 metres, depending on which it can carry between 44 and 63 passengers. The NEOPLAN Tourliner is fitted as standard with the electronic stability program, which, together with the electronic braking system with braking assistant and maximum speed control, sets a new benchmark for standard coaches.
NEOPLAN's attractive flagship: the double-decker Skyliner
n 1967, NEOPLAN surprised the branch with the world's first double-decker touring coach: the Skyliner. At the Busworld fair in autumn 2011, MAN Truck & Bus is launching the sale of the fifth generation of the successful NEOPLAN Skyliner. The "Sharp Cut" design with clear lines and clean edges in glass combined with uncompromising aerodynamics sets new standards in the top coach league. Its drag coefficient (cW) of only 0.41 is a value unequalled by any other double-decker coach. This aerodynamic optimisation leads to very efficient consumption figures and thus to passenger transport that is very efficient from an environmental point of view. Commensurate power is provided by the modern, economical MAN D26 common-rail engine, which delivers 505 hp.
There is space for up to 83 seats in the new NEOPLAN Skyliner. The fact that the coach has been lengthened by 20 centimetres relative to its predecessors and now measures 13.99 metres benefits the passenger and luggage compartments equally. Two wide doors and a low entrance height of less than 36 centimetres make for comfortable access to the lower deck. With its standing height of 1.81 metres and a wide aisle, it makes an even more spacious impression than one would expect. The upper deck presents itself as a luxurious rest area with a standing height of 1.68 metres. Awaiting the passengers upstairs is a lounge area suffused with light that has no peer on the double-decker coach market. The side windows running up into the roof, the new windows in the domed front above the first row of seats and big roof windows as standard - NEOPLAN calls this concept "Skylights".
Double-decker coaches are a big challenge for keeping the interior air-conditioned. Thanks to the dual-zone air-conditioning system, the driver is able to regulate temperatures on the upper and lower decks separately from each other better than ever before. The conventional system in the rear of the coach now takes over the air conditioning of the upper deck alone, while the lower deck has two evaporators of its own, each delivering nine kilowatts.
The NEOPLAN Skyliner marks the first time that electronically controlled comfort drive suspension (CDS) has been installed as standard in a double-decker coach. It is particularly on this type of vehicle, with its relatively high center of gravity, that CDS is able to fully utilise its strengths: driving stability and safety are considerably increased while rolling and pitching of the body are decreased, all of which results in greater comfort for the passengers.
